Two months ago, I posted about my mouse that had stopped being affectionate
and started attacking.

It's been getting worse and he finally bit and drew blood this week. I wait
until he is sleeping to put food in the case, but he woke up and got me. My
toddler stuck his finger in the cage and got himself a bite too (no blood).
Getting Mouse safely in and out of the cage to clean it is a tricky and long
process. I feel like I'm working in a one mouse mental clinic.

The only physical oddity is recent. In the past couple of days he's been
trying to jam his head through the bars and has made matching sores on the
sides of his nose.

Is it possible for a mouse to lose his mind?

rabies comes to mind. has he or might he have had any contact with any other
mammals? if so you should cancel everything and see a doctor today to ask
about it.

We have no other animals, except a fish. No other animals have been in the
house.
I can't live in fear of a mouse and he can't be happy living the way he is.
Should he be put down? :-(

he might be happy. if he's eating and running on his wheel and keeping himself
clean, then he's happy enough, and there's no reason to have him killed. if he
begins to injure himself or act in obvious pain or distress, then yes, having
him killed would be appropriate.

as for dealing with him while cleaning his cage, try wearing gardening gloves,
and use two cages. when the first cage needs cleaning just prepare the second
cage with food, water, and bedding. then catch the mouse and drop him in the
second cage. you can then clean the first at leisure, and you only have to
wrestle with the mouse once.

Good idea about the gloves and cages! Other than the recent rubbing sores
on his nose, he dos not have any injuries. He eats like a pig and likes his
wheel. Thank you for your insight.

Is he near the cages of other mice? I could not put the cages of my two
male mice on the same table of they would hurt themselves trying to get
out to attack each other. Maybe he is trying to get at another male of
female mouse and it is making him aggressive. They have a very good
sense of smell so just having another mouse in the same room might be
enough to make the little guy crazy.
