I've been wondering the same. I only started reading this ng a few weeks
ago and now, all of the sudden, no posts for many days.
I'll write back later (by tomorrow) about my home and all that has changed
in the last month here. Had one die in my arms a few weeks ago. Got a new
ferret to keep the other one happy. She's much younger and drives us crazy
but we love her to death already.

I'm sure this group has many readers - I admit I don't post a lot but I
regularly visit this group.
Perhaps to kickstart things again, lets get people to ask a few questions,
even trivial ones which have been bugging us for a while.
I'll start by asking - can ferrets actually be litter-trained ?
I've kept ferrets for years and have found it almost impossible. I keep a
litter tray in a corner, but they seem to treat it as a play area, and just
roll around in it and kick the litter all over the floor.

I'm usually just reading here, also. But, I check everyday, often. We have
our six fuzzies. They sometimes use their boxes, but will mostly go on
papers we put out. A couple are good about using a box all the time, the
others "miss".

You probably keep your litterbox too clean ;-) They think it's the same as a
rice box then. So don't wash the thing too often, and if you have to, keep
some of the poo to throw back into the box. And yes, I'm serious.

we KNEW that you guys were out there somewhere !
to pete ,
i don't now if any ferret ALWAYS uses a box
which is why i keep papers in another corner
that they like . 90% of the time they use the box .
some times you have to " direct " them and eventually
you won't have to .

I only let one or two ferrets in the house (only the kitchen) at a time. I'm
usually reading a book and keeping an eye on them, but I usually miss them
doing their business in the wrong corner. Sometimes they make half an effort
and do it next to the tray, If I put paper down, they just mess around with
it. The litter-tray gets moved towards the centre of the room, and I end up
using loads of kitchen-roll cleaning up.
I also think they don't like using the litter-tray because they find it
slippery and they do the splits at a difficult moment. Perhaps I need to
make a wooden one to make it easier.
Luckily I do have a ferret-run outside - 9 foot by 5, - so they do get
plenty of exercise.

They can be but from what I've heard, even the best will have accidents
occasionally.
My oldest ferret, Ted E. Bear, is an exception to the rule (so far). I've
finally given him access to every room recently and he always goes where he
is supposed to go. No accidents so far. When he's out, he has 3 choices:
- back in the cage for a moment
- papers put down in corner of the bathroom
- papers put down in corner of one bedroom
Because of this, I let him out to roam the house often each day. He
definitely loves the new freedom. He's also good about not getting into
things that he shouldn't get in to.
My other ferret that recently died, and the new one....I would never give
them this much freedom. Well, maybe someday with the new one but she's
still a baby and would most likely get into trouble right now roaming free.
When I let her out, it's under constant supervision.
And btw, I just use newspapers for bathroom, in cage bottom and other
places. It works well, you just have to change them out several times a
day. >> Stay informed about: missing persons |

I have a little girl here, Kira, the matriarch, who will poop on the
floor right in front of you staring right at you, after you either
1.punish her 2.stop her from doing something she wants 3.close a door
in her face. Talk about cheek! My youngest will go back to the cage to
use the box everytime.

My kids have always been really good about using the litterbox and/or
newspapers, but maybe it's because I make them really accessible. I
let the ferrets tell me where to put the boxes and/or newspapers and I
have multiple places in each room because they are little and their
little legs can only go so fast! They get playing and since they
can't cross their legs AND run, I try to keep it easy for them; in
return, all my kids have been anywhere from 90 to 100% accurate. I
have one ferret left now - and he has free roam in my bedroom and play
time in the rest of the house a few hours a day. He's excellent in
both places - I think it's because he's a happy, well-adjusted little
guy. He was "dribbling" for a bit before his adrenal surgery, but he
couldn't help that and is over it now.
HEY SPANKY & DAD & L'il SKI!! Good to see you're still here!! I miss
the old newsgroup I used to be able to read on my old computer. This
one I have to chase down online and just don't think to look for it
cuz I'm busy. Will try to look in every now and then - great to see
you still here. Give those fuzzies a hug from me, k?

In the US, a baby ferret will cost you about $100 - $120 from a pet store.
Then you need a good cage...about $200 for a decent one. Then more money
for a few hammocks and a supply of quality food. Figure on $350 to start
with...then also consider buying a 2nd ferret as they love the ferret
company. It's not cheap.
Also keep in mind the occasional trips to the vet which is NOT cheap either.
Since you've never had one though, you should read up on them before buying.
They are high maintenance pets if you really want to treat them right.
Especially buying baby ones....they have way more energy than older ones and
you need to be willing to spend the time with them.
Do consider buying a pair from a ferret shelter. These are orphans that got
rejected by people that didn't have the time to love them properly. Older
ones will take you less time to care for plus you'll be giving a good home
to ones that really need one. Shelter ferrets are a bit cheaper too.
If you have the time to spend with them....and are willing...you will end up
with 2 new best friends. They are very intelligent and loving creatures. >> Stay informed about: missing persons |

Yes, you need a cage. You can even build it yourself. Mine is an open top
pen with plywood walls 30 inches high, 4 foot square with plywood floor
covered with outdoor carpeting Ferrets are very active and should be
supervised whenever they are roaming around the house. Left alone, they
will inevitably get into something they are not supposed to, or rip up a
carpet to get past a closed door. Ferrets are ideal for people who spend a
lot of time a home, esp people who live alone. They are not ideal for
active households with lots of people coming and going or kids running
around. The poor ferrets get stepped on in those circumstances (ouch).

We have cages, but never lock them in it. They have their own bedroom with
their cages and stuff in it. We occassionally lock them in their room, when
we have company because they do tend to bite. Other than that they have 2
rooms that they have constant "free run". Ours love to go outside. One is
pretty new w/us, so she hasn't gotten to go camping w/us. Our female,
Lexie, loves to go camping w/us. I think because its new grounds for her to
explore. She will get to show Girdie the ropes of camping and conning us
into giving them lots of walks, haha. We love taking them to the parks and
stuff cause most people have no idea what they are.
Getting them from a shelter is a very good idea. Unfortunately there are no
shelters close to our area. They are expensive from our pet stores, about
$150 each, but I would definately get 2. If not at the same time at least
fairly close so they won't be by themselves for very long. Ours love having
you in the same room. They don't necessarily play with you all the time,
but they want to be where you are. Make sure your rooms are ferret proof.
Ferrets for Dummies is a good book to start with. I still refer to it at
times, and we've had them for about 5 or 6 years or so.

Unfortunately, you live in hostile-to-ferrets California, where ferret
rescue organizations cannot operate in the open. I suggest you contact
Ferrets Anonymous in Pittsburg, CA (near Berkeley) and ask for help in
adopting one or two ferrets from someone who can't take care of them
anymore. Explain to them you have limited resources but plenty of love to
give. You may have to drive a ways to pick up the fuzzies. Also, the
bigger the cage the better, but 4x4x4 feet or bigger would do the trick.
Best of luck - CW
