I have read some threads in this forum that suggest goldfish goes well
with minnows. There are many people suggesting this. However, I did
read one post that said that the goldfish will eat the minnows. Is
that true?

I am planning to put one or two small goldfish and some minnows in a
10 gallon tank. How many minnows will work well? Also, are there any
other small fish that I can put with the minnows and may be one or two
goldfish?

Thanks.
Petre

Goldfish will eat the minnows if the minnows fit in their mouths.
Otherwise, they get along fine. Be careful how many fish you put in a 10
gallon tank - the rule of thumb is usually 1 goldfish/10 gallons. You would
need to do much more upkeep on the water in the tank if you overstock it.

I believe that if you're going to mix types of fish, goldfish with
tropical fish, you should have a bigger tank so that each type of fish
will have their own space to be with their own kind.

Depending on what type of goldfish you have, the zippy little minnows
zooming around the tank might cause stress in fancy goldfish. And
remember that goldfish start off small, but they grow bigger.

I have 3 goldfish and 3 white cloud mountain minnows, and they get along
just fine. The monnows mostly stuck together in a bunch and keep out of
the goldfishes way, but sometimes they get brave and swim around the
goldfish who dont seem that bothered.

One of my Goldfish certainly has a big enough mouth to fit a minnow in and
I have seen him chasing one of the minnows around, but the minnows are too
fast for him to catch up and he soon gets bored.

I have also seen one of my other goldfish following a minnow around, but
both of them were just swiming slowly around quite leasurely, which is why
I say follow rather than "chase".

The store where I bought my 2nd goldfish had (and still have) a large tank
with a lot of goldfish and a lot of minnows in it, they all seemed quite
happy together, when I introduced the 2nd goldfish and the minnows to the
tank the 1st goldfish sent a while whizzing around after the minnows but
once the novelty wore off hes never bothered them again, and it's the 3rd
goldfish who still occasionaly chases after the minnows.

The intersting thing I have noticed is that when its food time the goldfish
will fight with each other over the food, chasing each other around the
tank and nudging each other, and it can get quite frenzied, but they
allways ignore the minnows who dart around the goldfish picking up bits of
food.

I was told by the guy in the store that minnows like to be with other
minnows, and that 3 was the least number we should have, but hes recomend 6
or more.

I kept 2 small comet goldfish with 2 rosy red minnows in a 10 gallon
tank last fall and winter. Everyone got along really well until one
the the minnows died and the breeding season started. The other minnow
(a male) starting chasing the largest goldfish and biting its fins. He
probably thought the goldfish was a rival male.

Now the minnows are in their own larger tank but occasionally one of
the smaller goldfish go to visit for a while and they all swim around
together. I'm thinking of adding some white cloud mountain minnows
too.

And yes, it's time to get my now three goldfish a bigger tank - I'm
looking at 30 gallons!

Madeup, thanks for the info. It's very useful. I hope
you can help me with this - I have read that it is also alright to put
Zebra Danios with goldfish, is that correct? And I did read one thread
that said that you can have guppies with goldfish too, again, is it
correct?

I am in Canada and the aquarium I frequent doesn't seem to stock
minnows. They
have Zebra Danios (both long and short fin ones) and a variety of
guppies. I am thinking of introducing maybe 3 or 4 of one of these in
with the goldfish.

I know goldfish do grow big, but mine are right now only about 1.5
inch
including the tail. They are gold telescope eyes.

Grateful for any advice.
Petre.

A friend of mine has 6 Zebra Danios in a tank with about 7 gold fish and a
Black Moore, they all seem to get along fine. However she used to have 7
Danios and one of them was injured when she was cleaning the tank, and
rather than put him in a seperate tank to recover she put him back in the
tank, it seemed ok for a couple of days but was eaten overnight by the
Black Moore.

I've allways kept a close eye on my minnows incase any of are ill, as I'm
fairly sure they will not survive very long with the greedy goldfish
around.

I dont know anything about guppies I'm afraid, maybe someone else here can
help??
