This is a general question about microchips.

My parents recently adopted (privately) an 8mth old labrador. The
previous owner told them that she was microchipped, and promised to
post all relevant documents to them.

Unfortunately, the previous owner did not send the documents, and is no
longer contactable (she leaves her mobile switched off).

Is there a way in which my parents can get the microchip information
updated without the original documentation?

I am in the UK.

Thanks,
Kate.

Take her to the Vet, they can read the chip there with their scanner, it
should (hopefully) also give information where the dog is registered and the
company etc.

Regards

I would venture to guess that the company wouldn't change any information
unless they got approval from the previous owner. (or some type of bill of
sale showing previous owner's information and new owner's information) For
all they know the dog was stolen and the people that stole it want to make
sure it doesn't trace back (NOT saying this is what happened - but think
about it...)

The vet could scan and get an address for the first owner - maybe there is a
land line that can't be switched off, or they could go to the owner's
residence and wait them out. (assuming they don't already know this info)

Don't know about in the UK, but around here, there isn't a centralized
database for this kind of stuff, the thing is, all of the humane societies
check with the same database before any of the others. So, get the pup
scanned, then go visit your local shelters, and the city pound and what not,
and find out what they use to trace the dogs. (around here, its PetLynx),
then check if the microchip info is registered with that site. if not,
you're home free, just put the chip information in there.

coutnries. Os

If she has been chipped your vet will find it and be able to help . If she
hasn't been chipped your vet should be able to do this for her, it's a very
quick process and not expensive.

As far as I know there are a couple of different systems for microchips
(even within the country). I had Erwin chipped at one clinic in Calgary, and
then took him to the humane society to see if they could read his chip, and
they couldn't.
There are also a number of different databases. The chip itself only gives a
number. That number is unique to your dog. The chip manufacturer will have
that number in their database, but another group might not. There is for
obvious reasons not way to update the contact information in a pre-existing
database without the original owner present, but you can get that number
registered with one of the other databases (I know for example that the
local shelters always check with PetLynx first, neither of my guys was
registered with PetLynx. If I'd sold them, and someone else registered their
number with PetLynx, the shelter would have identified them as belonging to
the other person... They are both on PetLynx now...)

Yes, go to the local animal shelter and have them do a scan. You need to
find out who the maker is and what registry its from.
