I put a female and a male together. It looked like they were getting along
ok. Today, I noticed that the male was losing his pretty tail.

Why??

I have them separated now.

They were together for a couple weeks or more.

did you intend to breed them? males and females shouldnt be put together
because females can easily kill males or vice versa. only after a period of
conditioning should you put them together and then u have to remove the
female after the mating is done and you need atleast a 10 gallon tank to
breed them in. www.bettatalk.com or www.bettastarz.com explains the
spawning process better.
