Apologies to the group for yet another lost bird. I live in Merseyside and
have traced the owner to Wrexham, however, it would appear the owner has
either since moved on at that address or died. Is there anyway the owner can
still be traced, so we can reunite him with his bird?

His name is Mr Marsh, of Wrexham. I have the ring details if required. It
has a suspected broken or damaged wing.

Thanks for any help.

Maurice

Maurice,
if the bird was only dehydrated, and you gave it water, and the bird was
capable of drinking, it should not be too late for it to re-cooperate.
The bird must have some sort of disease, or internal injury, besides the wing,
that could be killing (killed?) it. If, for instance, the injuries were caused
by a cat, the bird could die from a bacteria almost all cats have. ( I
believe it's called Pasteurella bacterium?) This bacteria is in cats saliva
and claws, and is supposed to cause an immediate infection in a scratched or
bitten bird, which could possibly cause their demise in as little as 24 hours.
Just a thought...........

Maurice, if the bird has a broken or otherwise injured wing, it may have
contracted an infection. Any idea how it came to be injured? For instance,
if it had been caught by a predator like a cat it would definitely need
antibiotics.

If it has had some water (assume you mean it did drink some rather than just
have it available) and has access to it, it should help dehydration, but if
a bird is pretty sick or traumatized, their system doesn't always work as it
should.

It may need injecting with fluids which will give it a quick boost - like (I
believe) Hartmanns Fluid.

If there is a bird rescue, or wildlife hospital which could deal with it as
an emergenvy, I'd advise that - or a vet who knows birds - provided they
don't just put them down.

John

I am not for sure about homing pigeons, but my diving breeds literally
fly themselves to death. I used to put name bands on my birds and
every time someone called it was to late. They almost always said that
the bird acted like it couldn't fly. It probably couldn't, as they
always were just about wasted from flying. There is a point of no
return when it is to late for the bird to make a comeback. Just some
musings while checking out the ngs.
cheers,
tonyf
