Do you know what caused the death of your goldfish? I would check my
ph, ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels and perform a large water
change before doing anything. No, its not cruel to keep only one
goldfish (although they do seem to prefer to have a buddy) it really
depends on your situation. If your tank is large enough and you have a
quarantine tank set up for a new fish then I say go fish shopping : )

How big is the tank? Under 10 gallons? If so then you can only keep ONE in
that tank. 10 per goldfish is the "rule".
