For Thanksgiving, we moved Toby's hutch next to my recliner in the
living room. I found I was *really* bothered by the smell from his
litter box.
It didn't take long to figure out the smell wasn't from Toby, it was
the smell of the aspen shavings we've been using.
Fortunately, the bale was just about gone so I bought a pine/spruce
bale and dumped the rest of the aspen into the compost.
If *my* nose was being bothered, I can only imagine how Toby felt about
it.
The pine/spruce is virtually odor free... What a difference!

Kiln dried I hope, if it smells like pine then its not kiln dried and has bunny
and human health issues.
What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?

I always thought that pine was not good because of the aeromatic chemicals
(hence the pine smell).
Try Critter Country; it's in pellet form and provides excellent oder control
(smells sweet) and is made of plant fiber so it is actually good for the buns
if they eat it. >> Stay informed about: It's the litter, stupid! |

Did you read my original post all the way through, or just until you

There is a lot of debate on that. Labs stopped using pine litter because it
had a small effect on some liver microsomal enzyme(s?). It was important to
the labs because it introduced an unwanted variable into experiments.
One article that someone sent to me talked about how many other things
(e.g., spaying and neutering) could cause the same thing. Many people use
pine with no ill effect. I use paper for Jessie, mainly because of HRS
advice and the fact that it doesn't stick to her fur like wood chips do. I
used aspen for a while, but the rabbits would track it everywhere.

There are other issues with un treated pine such as high infant mortality,
altering the sleep time when anaesthetised, respiratory irritant, carcinogens,
to name a few.
