Canada geese may soon be sitting ducks

WASHINGTON, Aug. 22 (UPI) -- Days are numbered for flocks of Canada
geese that have become a nuisance in urban centers across the nation.

The federal government has proposed allowing states to kill hundreds
of thousands of the big, brassy birds, which currently are federally
protected -- but probably not for long. Soon they may be sitting
ducks, says the San Francisco Chronicle.

These messy, aggressive honkers, which can grow to 14 pounds and live
for up to 20 years, have found life in urban areas so hospitable, many
of them no longer bother to follow their species' ancient migration
path from Canada in the summer to their winter homes in the southern
United States and Mexico.

It's these resident geese whose behavior has prompted a growing chorus
of complaints from homeowners, park districts, golf courses and
suburban business parks that are the subject of the rules proposed by
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

Good. They are excellent table fare.

I was wondering about this. I would hate to see them go to waste.

Couldn't predators (humans, eagles, etc) be introduced?

If there are so many they are a pest, nobody - except the geese - could
object to hunting them.

If people eat them, that cuts down the consumption of factory bred animals.

Geese are a gourmet food item.
As pests go, better to have geese than say pigeons.
Pigeons are also a game food, though not that popular.

Do these geese taste okay?

I heard eating pesky town pigeons isn't practical - they live off garbage
and taste like garbage.

The Washington geese might also taste fowl.

:-)

They are wonderful, particularly when smoked.

Pigeons are garbage. Mourning doves are the game food in the US.

A group of friends in college days (back in 1976 or so) were broke:
eating rice and noodles mostly, trying to make very limited funds last
until the start of next term. However, they had a good meal for
Christmas. Bought bread for stuffing, went to the town park, and killed
a goose. Their report was that it was tasty. I'm not sure if that is
tasty on an absolute scale or just tasty relative to noodles served with
soy sauce and powdered milk.
