am looking for a good apartment dog for companionship. have seen a
"jack rat terrier". do no know anything about the breed. can someone
give advice on this dog? what exactly is the breed, i assume it is a
cross between a jack russel and a rat terrier. is it a good dog for
companionship, a good apartment dog, does it bark a lot. etc.? any
info on this dog would be appreciated also any other recommendations
of other breeds for apartment/companionship would be appreciated also. >> Stay informed about: jack rat terrier |

There is no such breed. There are Rat Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers;
they are very similar dogs, both in appearance and in temperament.

It may be a cross between the two, but that's not really a "breed".

No way of knowing for sure, but - Jack Russells are NOT good apartment
dogs. They need a *lot* of exercise and they are serious hunting dogs- which
means you've got to not only have a place to let them run off leash, but
it's got to be a secure place.
And Jack Russells are deliberately bred not only to bark a lot, but to
have loud, carrying voices. Their job is to go down holes and harass prey
until it comes out

You should start by doing research on dogs that were specifically bred to
be companions. Jack Russells are bred to hunt. >> Stay informed about: jack rat terrier |

NEITHER of these breeds are good apartment dogs, so I'd expect a cross
between them to be the same as well.
They BARK, they DIG, they need a lot of activity and time spent around
people or they will get bored. When they get bored, they get
resourceful, ie, decide to re-upholster your couch or dig through the
drywall in the laundry room.
probably not a great choice, IMHO

Oh yes- I forgot to mention the digging. Since they're also bred to dig
out prey, most Jacks and Rats have a very strong digging instinct. If they
can't dig outside, they'll dig inside, which can be hard on furniture. >> Stay informed about: jack rat terrier |

HI,
Not to 'knock' any other breed, if you don't plan to leave your dog alone a
lot, I would suggest that you research Pugs.
