Why Scumbirds Should Never Be Tolerated Period!
Posted by Bluesman (My Page)

Hello to all of the Bluebird lovers here,

My name is Mike Brown and I live in Daviess County,Ky near Owensboro,Ky
in a small town called Maceo. I have loved bluebirds ever since I was a
small boy and I also have one of the largest purple martin colonies in
the state of Kentucky. This year I had 116 pairs of martins! I also
have a bluebird\tree swallow trail that I have managed for 30 years. I
frequent the Purple martin clubhouse forum and the PMCA Forum.(Purple
Martin Conservation Assoc) This was a posting I made the other day over
there about bluebirds and a friend of mine named Michael Sanford
thought you guys here would enjoy it.

Bluebirds have always been my favorite bird! The Sky on his back and
the earth on his chest!!!! The Bluebird is forever April and Apple
trees blooming!! Even when you see one on the coldest winter day you
can instantly feel the sunshine burn up the sky! How can this glorious
Bird of Happiness not be evryone's favorite! This post describes how I
developed my lifelong hatred of starlings and House sparrows. Hope
ya'll(we say that in Kaintucky grin) enjoy it very much..

Mike Brown aka "Bluesman"

When I was 12 years old I started a Bluebird Trail on my Grandpa's
farm. Over the years it has grown and now the Bluebird is a very common
bird in this area of Kentucky. Once when I was 18 years old one of my
Bluebird Boxes had been worked on by a woodpecker. The woodpecker
enlarged the entrance hole making it over two inches in diameter. Well
I neglected fixing the hole that winter and that spring a pair of
Bluebirds moved in as usual and laid their beautiful sky blue eggs. All
was going well until that day... I will never forget that horrible
day!!

I was on my bike that beautiful April morning riding down that old
gravel road checking the boxes on my Bluebird trail. As I topped a
small hill and looked towards the bottom of that hill at the next
Bluebird House I saw something that made me so mad that my eyes began
to water. There was that beautiful, fearless male Bluebird engaged in an
all out war with two Starlings! That magnificent blue flash of his
wings as he dove and fought these two "Mistakes of Creation" was
flashing in the sunshine as he tried in vain to drive them away. As I
neared closer the Starlings took off and that Beautiful Bluebird sat on
top of the Bluebird Box calling for his mate to come out. He had an Air
of Victory about him but to me his voice just seemed heartbroken.
Inside that house this Great Warrior's little mate was dead.

I opened the house that I had neglected to repair and there she was.
Her head was a bloody mess. Her back was all tattered and torn but the
way she was lying there on her belly with her wings spread out over her
eggs made my blood begin to boil over with anger! I removed her body
and her eggs as I cleaned out the nest. The eggs would have no chance
now that their mother was murdered by the Scum of the Bird World. The
male sat on the powerline as I left on my bike and sang a half hearted
song that I can still hear today as I type this post. After I got about
30 yards away I stopped and turned to watch him for a minute. Time
after time he flew to the box and peered inside looking for his mate.
He started using that scolding call Bluebirds use and as he got mad I
got even madder! I blamed myself for what happened that day and that
day my friends started my life long hatred for Starlings and House
Sparrows! I came back two hours later and repaired the house. A week
later that male found another mate and they nested safe and sound
inside the protection of that 1 and 1\2 inch hole.

When I post about Starlings and Sparrows my friends sometimes people
may think that I am too extreme the way I talk about trapping them and
killing them. If you ever see what these nasty, foreign,no good for
nothing murderer's can and will do to Bluebirds,Martins,Tree
Swallows,Red Headed Woodpecker's,etc first hand then you too will
condem them with this same kind of hatred. They simply don't belong in
this country period! One Bluebird... One Purple Martin.. is worth more
than every starling on the face of this earth. We should all as martin
landlords fight with no mercy against them even if our colonies are all
SREH. However you choose to kill them is up to you but they should be
killed.. As many as you can trap. I choose to fastball the starlings
into the side of the tree that stands by my trap. It is just as Humane
as anything but even if it were not humane I would still do it and here
is why..

Each time I have a starling in the Controller trap I see that female
Bluebird on top of her eggs that day when I was 18. I see her mate
fighting like a demon to protect her from the nasty foreign invaders!
The rage comes back to me every time and believe me when I say.. The
starlings I kill die a whole lot easier death than the female bluebird
did that morning. They are the same as stepping on a cockroach..
Swatting a fly.. They should not be tolerated in any amount and I wish
there was a way to cause their extinction.

America has without a doubt the most beautiful birds in the whole
world. There are so many awesome species that live and breed here.
There is no place for House Sparrows and Starlings as far as I am
concerned. That holds true for many people but unfortunately not enough
people. I know of people who just let them nest. They actually think
Starlings in their martin houses are martins! I have also witnessed
first hand a Red Headed Woodpecker dig a nest hole and have a Starling
pair drive them away from it! The great Red Headed Woodpecker folks!!
This bird was once as common as the Robin. You could see one every day
if you wanted to but now thanks to the nasty Starling most people have
never seen one. That to me is a shame.. Since I installed my controller
here at my site and waged all out war on starlings the Redheads are
making a comeback. This year I know of 4 nesting pairs within a 1 mile
circle of my house. I just saw two Redheads at my suet feeder this
morning but 4 years ago they were never here at the feeders.

In closing I want to ask everyone something.. How much do you love your
martins? How much do you love the Bluebird and the native American
birds?? I know the answer to that from everyone here right now and I
know you all love them. I asked for this reason... The amount that you
love the martins is the amount that you should hate the Starlings and
House Sparrows. They are simply a disease..a nuisance and they have no
place here. They should be destroyed and never a head turned while
destroying them. There is no "Middle of the Road" when it comes to
them. The rewards of this kind of attitude... A countryside filled with
the sghts and songs of the greatest group of native birds on planet
earth!!! All American Birds!!

Merciless in the ongoing fight, Bluesman
