Archived from groups: alt>pets>parrots>african-grey, others (more info?)

I have an Umbrella Cockatoo, a real sweetie. I would like to get him a
*slightly* bigger cage.

Dimensions:

Approx 48 inch wide
Approx 32 inch deep
Approx 60 inch high

Can anyone recommend a cage at this rough size? I know its not HUGE for a
bird his size, but he is rarely in the cage - sleeps, poops and eats in it,
otherwise he will be sitting on top or following me about the house.

Thanks in advance for any advice, and sorry for the crosspost.

Badass.

I have a U2 as well, and he mostly just eats and sleeps in his cage.

I bought a cage on ebay, not quite as large as the yours (36x24x60).
There are lots of them out there, and Mine was like $160 delivered, but
I got a pretty good price (the vendor told me I had the lowest bid ever,
and I believe him, but most of the bids weren't more than about $80 more).

It's a cheap chinese knockoff, but the epoxy paint is fine, comes with
bowls, skirts, and nothing to complain about. NO sharp edges, etc.
(I'm very particular in my cage inspection, the bird came to me in a
terrible and dangerous cage).

I'll probably get 5-10 years out of it, closer to 5 than 10, is my
guess. Perfect for the price. The reason I give it so few years is
that the epoxy enventually is nicked/worn of the iron and then the iron
is prone to rust. If there are repair kits for such situations I'd be
curious to know about them. For less active birds I just buf the iron
with a dremel if it starts to show rust. For a U2 you need a pretty
much bullet proof cage since they're so active.

If I were going to do it /right/ (in my opinion), I'd get a stainless
steel cage.
It should last a lifetime, but it'll cost at least $1000 more, and I
didn't have that much money to spare at the time.

Anyway, if you look on ebay, you'll find plenty of cages, though maybe
not that large. Just follow the usual safe practices of talking with
the vendor first, asking questions, making sure you get responses.
Don't buy from an unresponsive vendor.
