I've been feeding 10-12 stray cats for a couple yrs in a residential
neighborhood in Central Florida. The neighborhood management has decided
to catch the cats and turn them into the local animal shelter (where they
kill them in 5 days if no adoption). They're outdoor cats but not
aggressive at all. They like being petted.
Is there anywhere in Central Florida that I could take them, like a
"refuge?" I'd be happy to provide for spaying/neutering of them. >> Stay informed about: homes for strays? |

I don't know the cat situation in your area, but you can try contacting any
local humane societies or rescue organizations. If they have space, they may
be able to take them. Rescues may be willing and able to transport the cats
a little further to other shelters with some space. If they don't have space
for all of them, is it possible for you to take in the remainder and give
them over one or two at a time, as space allows?
By the by, an impound facility for strays is not the same as an animal
shelter. Impounds will hold for a state-appointed number of days and then
euthanize if the animal isn't claimed or adopted out. Some shelters still
have a time limit, but many will hold onto adoptable animals for quite
awhile (and will either do the medical work - vaccinations, spay/neuter,
testing for FIV/FeLV - themselves, or will have the adopter bring the animal
back for such things at a later date).

Bob, this is just terrible. I have a suggestion for you, to beat the
neighborhood association at their own game; Why don't you build some kind of
awesome safe secure enclosure for them....on your property. Is this a
possibility?? http://www.just4cats.com/page7.html or
http://www.cat-world.com.au/cat-worldenclosures.htm OR how about this idea?
http://www.lisaviolet.com/cathouse/backyard.html
Put these cats safely in your backyard, and have the cat-proof barrier, to
keep them in your yard. This would be the answer! First you would have to
install this on your backyard fence. Once it is securely in place, get a
hold of as many cat traps as possible, and start trapping. As you trap each
cat, take it to your vet and have it spayed/neutered. Then bring it back to
your house and release it to the safety of your OWN back yard. Carol

Nice enclosures, I've used the same method for 8 yrs. without the top. A 6'
fence of the chicken mesh works as cats won't climb the mesh fence once they
test it with claws & claws get caught.
Homes for Strays? Bob I empathies with your predicament. I've posted re:
this type prob, feedings strays and how to find them a home/farm. A Home for
Hobo? The fault goes to the one feeding the poor cats -- but as you can see
it's very hard to get help. These municipal shelters/pounds... will kill
them & all cats in 3-5 days, some sell them to research... A horrible fate
after being caged usually with dogs also slated for death. Often feral type
cats are killed at once as they are not adoptable (so claimed) due to
'personality' problems. As are sick cats, unfriendly, vicious, dirty...
Basically if the cat isn't wearing a collar tag & can't be identified and
returned for $ they are killed or sold for $. Thus are the facilities paid -
they get nothing to capture, hold & feed a cat. FIGHT LEGISLATION, fight
local bi-laws to have these barbaric facilities improved.
Bob, I know it's ridiculous as suggested you pen in your yard and keep all
cats you feed. I agree it's much better to feed cats in need than not at
all. It is a fine thing to do if that is all that can be done & you're a
good person for it & for this effort to help the homeless cats. I suggest;
look for farms, look for rescue organizations, call the local newspaper get
them to run a story on the cats predicament..., as a last rescue option - if
nothing else --- I suggest relocate the cats to a wilderness area and
provide food for them in the new 'private' spot. Get creative in
transporting them. Can you pick them up or cage them? It may sound extreme
but if nothing else try capture, release & feed. Thus is the fight to save
our cats & animals from the predicaments we created. If you asked a cat
they'd chose life - let them have it!!!!

the local animal shelter kills them in 3 days if they're considered 'feral'.

i'd be happy to take them myself, as far as it takes, i just need somewhere
to take them where they'll be safe and and have a place to live? living in
the cage for 3 days at the local shelter (before being killed) is what i'm
trying to prevent unfortunately.

thanks for the links, i'll try them..i've been to the spca, but the spca
would prefer they go to the animal shelter because they're not 'tame' enough
for housepets unfortunately..they get along well together, but aren't very
approachable -- they're not aggressive, just afraid, they run..a few of them
you can pet, handle ok..

If nobody else has mentioned it, try getting ahold of Alley Cat
Allies. I don't have their website URL handy, (don't have a browser
open), but a quick Google search should give it to you. They may be
able to help you with ideas, a local group, or some options.
Best of luck to you and the ferals,

This Link; US Cat Rescue, provides many organizations, an excellent site:

Also is there anyway you can get the cats to a new location and continue
feeding them? Any local farms you can convince to take the cats, maybe offer
to provide the cat food if they can provide the farm. Farmers often keep
farm/barn cats to control the mice. "Ginger-lyn Summer"

Yep I see that.. impersonating everyone. I kinda figured. The other one..
about Canada is from me. Cause someone asked about .. Finland and their
adoption policy which I know nothing about.. hehe cause I live in Canada. I
don't even know what Canada's adoption policy is. We got our first cat
from the pet store and our second one came from the Humane Society in Sault
Ste Marie Ontario Canada. I bet the troll doesn't know where that is...
hehehe...
