Aloha everyone.

As some of you might remember, I have a male mouse in solitude after having
kids a few months ago. I posted about a bald spot and got the replies of
food allergy, mites and over barbering.

I've been cleaning the cage weekly, and dropped him in a little oil weekly.
I thought he was getting better, then this week I notice it getting worse.
He's scratching it bigger and on to his left ear too. The left ear looks bad
and theres even a hole in it now, about the size of a paw.

I got a new brand of food and pulled out the corn. Hopefully he gets better.
This may sound morbid, but for future reference, is there a humane way to
end a mouses suffering if it becomes so severe?

Aloha

you might want to try puttng some neosprin or polysporin plus (the ones
that have "pain killers" in them too) that can sometimes help stop them from
scratching. if thiey've been scratching a while, sometimes they develop
sores that we can't always see at first that itch or bother them, all they
know to do is scratch. I've had several males loose part or all of an ear
from over scratching, even when the other problems were long gone. but the
neosporin seems to help that. apply every day, multiple times if necessary,
either with your finger or a q-tip (i've one little guy who'd bite you as
soon as look at you when it was real bad...) I've talked to a few other
mosue folk who have had the same sort of thing pop up and theysuggested the
neosporin.. it will stop them from scratching so much and they wounds do
heal up, ears, of course, don't grow back, but since they are safely in
tanks, the loss of hearing sensitivitydue to not having big ears to funnel
sounds with isn't too detrimental.

That sounds like mites to me. Mites love to attack the years. I
strongly advise trying a more aggressive treatment for mites, ideally
with the advice of a veterinarian. There are various medications that
can be given for mites (e.g. ivermectin) but a relatively noninvasive
and safe method is to place a pest strip containing dichlorvos near the
cage. This is the method used in laboratories. Such strips are sold in
the US under the brand name "Hot Shot No Pest Strip."

If you can stop the problem the ear will heal, but it won't grow back.
Due to mites I once had a mouse who ended up with a completely missing
ear but he didn't seem to mind.

I picked up the Hot Shot No Pest Strip for abou $6 at walmart. I'll hang it
on the wall right between the two mouse hoses about a food from the lids.
This should suffice? Or would it be better in a different location? I don't
want to harm the mice with this being too close or anything.

Aloha

I think that's about how far I put mine, although I don't know if the
distance matters much as long as it's in the same room. If indeed your
mice have mites (say that five times fast), it should kill every mite in
the room including the ones that aren't currently on the mouse.

Good luck, I really hope your mouse pulls through. I always wonder how
he's doing.

Thanks, Heather. I'll give a report back in a week or two on his condition.
I'll try a little neosporin on a QTIP too, but from being in solitude for
the last 4 months or so he's not as handlable as before. He does seem to be
eating more of this new brand of food (a hamster/gerbil food from walmart by
Hartz) where as I saw the last food dish seemingly untouched for days.

Surely one of these will eliminate the problem!

Aloha nui,
Brian

Nuts in hamster food cause some mice to scratch their ears completely off,
if there are any nuts (especially peanuts) in his cage his ear will never
heal.
