We are building a fence in our yard to keep our cat inside. We don't
want him to jump over it. How high should we make it? He is very strong
but also very heavy.

Probably higher than you can afford. Cats are very crafty and will probably
find a way, of it wants too. Even if front claws are gone, I have seen cats
scale high with just the backs.

Build an ordinary fence and be with the cat when he's in the backyard.
Train him to stay in the yard.

Cats run onto fences, you cannot retain a cat in a jard.. they also run down
brickbuilt walls totally vertical and go up on stairs or lifts from as high
as 4 story buildings.. No way can you cage a cat unless it was a indoor
kitten from scratch and even then they would like to escape... So forget
it.

LOL,
Even I agree with that one...now.

Sometimes you have to learn the hard way. I certainly did. I'm just
super lucky that we found him before he died. I can assure you that
even though Ringo was a total outdoor cat when we got him, but after a
BB gun pellet in the eye & leg, you could leave the front door open,
go to Spain on holiday & you would still find Ringo curled up on the
settee, or looking out the door, but Never leave the house!! It cost
him dearly, & made us feel terrible for allowing him to go out on his
own.
Thats saying something coming from a Brit...
