If I'm getting conflicting signals as to your house training
plans, then so is your puppy.

What is it - outside, inside, pee pads, crate? A combination
of the above will confuse your dog. For the time being, if
you want your dog to poo and pee outside, put away the pads
and place your puppy on a schedule whereby you take him out
when you think it's appropriate.

Every dog's schedule is different. In the morning, my puppy
needs to go outside three times in the first 30 minutes she's
up - twice pee, once poo. This is a small price to pay for
her sleeping through the night since she was 8 weeks old.

A crate is a spot to put your dog when you're not in a
position to supervise him. Since he's now learned that
defecating in the crate is possible, your job of supervision
is a little more difficult.

How big is your dog? How big is the crate? How long do you
need to leave him alone?

i want to train him to pee and poop on the training pad since i live
alone and my schedule is not predictable. i do want walk him outside
though, maybe once a day after work. the dog is 2lb(8weeks) and i got
the smallest crate but it's still too big for him.my townhome is three
story and i want to keep him in the first floor in the study room
since it's stained concrete floor and the smallest room. i think he
poops in the crate because the breeder kept him in the crate prior to
selling the dog. TIA

Then forget about outside at this point. It's confusing for
such a young dog - for now, he should only pee and poo on pads.

I have to leave it at that. While I don't train my own on pads,
I recognise the need for some owners to do so, and consistency
is important.

i think the studyroom may be too big for him so i'm thinking of
letting him stay in the guest bathroom since it's alot more confined.
i need some advise on traing him to pee on the training pad.i have few
questions here
1. should i place a training pad inside of crate to easier cleaning?
or should i leave it out and place some empty boxes inside the crate
to he won't have room to back away from his own poop when he poops in
the crate.
2. when sould i place him in the crate. i leave for work at 9:30 and
get home from work at 6:30. i typaically go to bed around 12:30 and
wake up at 8:30. do i place him in the crate when i sleep and away
from work? what do you suggest?
3. how do i place him on eating schedule? do i take away the food and
water tray after he eats?

that's all for now. will ask more later. TIA

That's selfish. You cannot do that to a puppy but particularly not to a
tiny breed. He needs to EAT frequently for one thing. Hire a pet
sitter. For TWICE (yes TWICE) during your work day.

>i typaically go to bed around 12:30 and

He needs to go out during the night. Keep the crate next to your bed
and set an alarm for 1-2 times.

> 3. how do i place him on eating schedule? do i take away the food and

Yes. Measure his food, provide it for 15 minutes, and then no food
until the next meal. But he is a tiny puppy and needs SEVERAL meals
throughout the day. Someone needs to provide those for him.

That may be counter-productive. Since you've already
mentioned crate training, let's run with it.

Crate training is not just about where and when he should poo
and pee - it's about giving him time and space to grow
comfortable in his new home. A well trained dog is one whose
owner has recognised small opportunities.

To your situation: confining him in a small room is teaching
him nothing. At the other end of the scale, leaving him alone
and free in a large house is also teaching him nothing.

> i need some advise on traing him

I have no experience with pee pads, other than ignoring them
when daycare dogs show up with them. They don't work well in
group situations.

No.

> or should i leave it out and place some empty

Yes.

That's too long for an 8 week old dog. You must come home at
lunch or find someone who can. It's not just peeing and
pooing, it's interaction - especially at a time when he's used
to a lot of company.

> i typaically go to bed

Night time is the best time to leave a new dog free in the
house, IMO. I'm a light sleeper, though.

I'd suggest going to bed earlier and getting up earlier so
that your new dog can get some exercise and interaction before
you head out.

> 3. how do i place him on eating schedule? do i take away
> the food and water tray after he eats?

Feed him at specific times. Take away his food if he leaves
it alone for a while; while most puppies are pretty good at
self-regulating food, this'll help you anticipate when he
needs to poo. Since he's a small breed puppy, he needs plenty
of small meals, so give him lots of opportunities to eat.

Never take away water.

You could also place your puppy in a dog daycare while you're at work so
there is someone available to look after it. A good way to socialize your
puppy too.

agreed, that is too long.

you could also be waking earlier to give the dog some play time. I never
had to do that because I only worked 3 hours at a time. Now I work 7. I
get up an hour earlier each day to exercise, play, feed, potty the dogs.
Its hard and the lack of sleep is not fun but its only fair to them.

or small dogs. I want Cali to go to daycare 3 days a week but the only one
around here has no small dog openings.

I'm betting its worth the commute though!

Next year I'll probably be in school over 10 hours a day. Heck, If I had
any time left over, I'd consider bringing Annie to Matt's every day :-)
