Post subject: need help with squirrel problem
Archived from groups: rec>birds (more info?)

we just returned from an out-of-town trip and found that
a squirrel had enlarged the entrance hole of our birdbox
which contained a great crested flycatcher incubating eggs.
the squirrel had destroyed the partially incubated eggs and
now the flycatchers have disappeared.

this morning, i replaced the front panel to the birdhouse with
an original sized hole. i would like to add an appropriate metal
plate around the entrance hole, to deter any further squirrel
activity (in the past, we have had to replace the front panel
several times, because of the same problem).

i am having difficulty finding a design for such a squirrel
detterent. CAN SOMEONE PLEASE HELP?

The cover of a tin can can be cut with good scissors. I turn the edge
about 1/16 so that there is no sharp edge, but others have dole me that
it's not necessary as long as the edge is free id "spikes" and is filed
smooth.

In theory, a squirrel could chew through a blank side of any wooden box.

jerry, thanks for your reply. i was hoping to find a sketch of proven
designs, rather than have to T&E for best results. i do not want
to make it difficult for a bird to land/hang on the outside edge of
the entrance hole, as might be the case if a large piece of metal
is used. so several designs come to mind, a circular ring of metal
1/4 inch wide, the same type of ring 1/2 inch wide (or wider), or
metal covering the entire face???

I put my metal apertures on the inside. I'm told that perches are a bad
idea on most birdhouses. Birds don't need them, but they do assist
predators. What's with "proven design? A hole of the right diameter in
material that a varmint can't chew isn't good enough?

I would agree with suggestions to make a bird house entry hole
squirrel proof, but I wonder what kind of squirrels you have.
Gray squirrels, no problem, but in our area it's the red squirrels that
cause havoc. I haven't seen a red squirrel in a couple of years,
but the last encounter was when a red squirrel chewed thru the
cedar siding, sheathing, insulation and pegboard in the garage,
and built a nest under the hood of one of our cars. I won't divulge
details, but it was nasty.

We put "beer balls" on the posts our Bluebird boxes are mounted on (and our
feeders). Neither the Gray Squirrels or the Red Squirrels have managed to
get by them. I am not sure if they still sell these quarter keg beer balls,
so they could be hard to find.

If you are near a rural area, drop around to a farm supply store. They
have huge washers with holes sizes of 1", 1 1/8", etc. Drill a couple
of holes through it and mount it to the front of the box.

Buy a live trap and move the animal at least, 3 miles away and release it.

Here are pictures of some bird houses with predator guards. Perhaps you
could use them as models and cut a metal guard.

And this page has links to construction plans for nest boxes, including a
"noel predator guard":
