geezer and dr. solo
i need your help. i have a 125 gallon tank with a 25 watt U.V.
sterilizer, two fluval 404's, an underground filter system with two
powerheads.
my problem is that i have 13 fancy goldfish in this tank and they are
doing great. the water is sparkling clean, the fish are healthy and all
my water parameters are perfect.
should i get rid on one of my goldfish since i am exceeding my one fish
for 10 gallon rule?? how do i decide which fish must go??? this tank
has been running for two years and there has never been a loss of life.
also should i remove my gravel (in almost 40 years of keeping fish i
have NEVER had one choke on gravel nor have i had toxic outbreaks). i
vacuum every other week and do 30% water changes every other week. i
can't imagine how pretty my tank will be without gravel.....the fish
love sifting through it and it does look nice.
any advice would be appreciated.

I had a scare last week when I came home from work and found my favorite
goldfish, a big round 4-inch pearlscale, facedown floating in the
gravel. I turned him around and saw that his mouth was stuck open in an
O position. He was struggling to breathe.
I quickly realized that the problem was a large river rock stuck in his
mouth. I took him out the tank, used a pair of tweezers and tugged the
rock out of his mouth. I was shocked when I saw that he had managed to
wedge a rock the size of a dime into his mouth. I have no idea how long
the rock had been stuck in his mouth, but he was fine when I left the
house..
I thought that the river rocks would be safe because they are not as
small as gravel. Anyhow, he's fine now and swimming around with his
tankmate, a smaller pearlscale. I hope he's learned his lesson about
trying to swallow large objects! |

Dude I would kill for a setup like yours and a "problem" like that. With
that setup, the work you are putting into mainting it, and the success you
are achieving, I would not call that overstocking. Keep all your fish. If
there is a problem, its the natural tendancy to overthink something and fix
things that ain't broke.

Oh my god, i hate when people overstock, it makes me want to cry and perform
self harm! People like you shouldn`t be allowed to eat fish, let alone care
for them! My advice would be to carefully pack everything (including the
gravel, fish and water). Then send it all to...

I will perform a number of tests on the equipment FOR FREE and tell you to
the nearest inch how much fish your tank can support so nothing like this
ever happens again. I know that you are evil but i think of myself as a good

I tool the gravel out of our tank last year... The fish were getting too big
for the gravel, and the levels were harder to control. I put in coloured
marbles. It gives nice colours and the fish love pushing them around and
