These animals have slowly moved north over the last century. Some may suffer
from frostbite on the tail and tend to have short lifespans in the north. They
are known to play dead and, if your animal is young, probably took that
response out of fear of you. Returning the animal to the wild is probably the
best thing to do. They are wild and would not make a good pet. Most likely
your state has rules governing the capture of wild animals anyway so all it
will take is one neighbor saying something to the wrong person and you will get
a visit anyway.
