My son in law just moved to Baja, and has found (naturally) the deplorable
conditions for dogs to be really dreadful. We all know that dogs in some
countries suffer terrible fates -- being struck by cars and left for dead;
going unfed; not spayed or neutered, etc., -- and he called today wanting to
know how he could help a few dogs who have been hanging around his house. He
said that he can't find any vets in Tijuana, and needs some advice in things
he can do to help. Does anyone know of any animal rescue, or care facilities
in or around Tijuana? We were thinking of just buying up a bunch of flea and
tick powder, and food, and taking it down to him. That will do for some of
the dogs, but some are in pain and have broken limbs.
If I can't find him any resources, is it true that you can give a dog an
aspirin or tylenol for pain?
Thanks for your help,

Aspirin is very irritating to the canine gut; must use buffered aspirin,
and then not for long periods of time. Tylenol is risky for dogs and
fatal for cats; not well tolerated by the kidneys.
Those loose dogs around your son's place have never had a rabies
vaccination, have every "worm" available, plus fleas, and possibly
ticks., have not been handled by people a lot, and are probably
malnourished. How much money does he have to pour down a hole? Unless
he can find a vet, that's what will be happening. Once he finds a vet,
the best thing he can do is get two or three who are human-safe which he
gets cleaned up, vaccinated, "fixed", and keep them confined to his
property and make pets of them.
I am not saying that he Shouldn't do something to help them. I'm just
saying that without immunizations, treatment for parasites,
sterilization and confinement, no matter what he does, it won't make a
dent... and the community will begin to dump dogs at his place.
This happened to parents of a friend who retired to Mexico, and to a
classmate who lived in Panama for some years in the early '70s.
These dogs are what is called "village dogs", a version of feral dogs,
for the most part. Feral dogs that scrounge a thin life from the human
community. Few of them have ever been pets, according to what my
friend's parents told us.

So true. I lived in a village in Belize for a couple of years and always took
'supplies' (first aid, general antibiotics, etc) and always did my best for the
dogs obviously suffering. Brought one back, in fact, and he had heartworm,
unbelievable allergies, several types of worms, was always a barfer, and
succumbed to a tick-borne disease called ehrlichia just last October. He lived
for 9 years, but always had problems. Those poor dogs are genetically AND
environmentally just doomed. Very sad but true. Comfort (food/water) and first
aid is all I would recommend. And like the lady said, watch out for rabies.

it sounds like the best thing you could do for them is get as many of them
spayed and neutered as possible.

Very true. In our village, the vets from the ag school in San ignacio came thru
each year to do rabies shots and spay/speuter. Did the surgery on my kitchen
table! And at $10.00 US per dog, I had 5 done! One small step.
