Post subject: need help determining what happened to my mouse
Archived from groups: alt>pets>mice (more info?)

My friend and I switched female mice so that her female could mate with my
male. Her female and my male get along better than the female I had with him
before. I do believe my male mated with the female he is currently
with --they both have very calm temperaments, did not come from the same
litter, and neither is dominating the other. However, the day after they
mated I took both mice out and let them crawl on the end table. That was
when something came out of the female, a strand of what looked like clear,
very hard feces linked together and another one exactly the same but having
a reddish brown color and whatever substance was linking them was clear and
hard as well. She is eating fine, her diet has remained the same. I clean
the cage often and cleaned it thoroughly before I introduced her to her new
cage. I was not able to see if this substance came from her anus or her
vagina. Could it have been the semen plug that mice develop so no other male
is able to mate with her for a day after mating? Or could it be the eggs of
the babies that her body was disposing of? Or could it be some weird feces,
and she might be sick?

Please worm your mice. They get worms from their food. It is contaminated by
wild rodents droppings in the field and the factory where the packet was
produced. Go buy some worm liquid from the pet store or veterinarian. I put
my mice in a small container with no food for a short time. I then give each
mouse a piece of bread with the worm liquid on. After each mouse has eaten
its anti-worm mixture, the mouse goes back in the community mouse house. A
change in diet will also cause mouse poo to change colour. HTH

It was only the one time that this happened. I discussed it with my vet and
he said they didn't have worms, and it was, as I suspected, the semen plug
put in after mating. And he said it in a much nicer way than you did.

How often do you need to worm mice? I never new that mice had to be
wormed before.
