Hi,
I would like to pick up any hot tips on how to care for a small hedgehog
we rescued from our garden in England 5 days ago. He was out foraging
in daylight on two extremely cold days so I brought him in and have been
keeping him in a rabbit hutch in a cool room until we can fatten him up
and release him in the spring. The vet has seen him and has given him
an injection for lungworm and since this can lead to pneumonia I am now
also giving him antibiotics twice a day. He (? - the vet forgot to
check!) weighs 300g and although he is wary he has taken to indoor life
quite well. He's eating a wet organic dog food and takes his medicine
via a single cat biscuit onto which I have dropped the antiobiotic in
liquid form. We have named him Spike.
My main concern is that Spike will get bored and won't get enough
exercise, so I have been letting him have the run of the room for short
periods. He has found and likes a warm spot on the carpet where the hot
water pipes run under the floor but he goes back into his hutch and
under his bedding (strips of newspaper) for long sleeps. Are there any
toys or activities that you can recommend for him during his waking
hours? I have tried a toilet roll tube which I saw recommended on one
website but he hasn't shown the slightest interest in it.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
