I have two amazons - a Yellow named Booey and a Red-lored named Tutu.
I'm also a newbie waiting to see what the chatter was....
(Also got 4 cockatiels, 3 budgies and a red-fronted parakeet. I won't
mention the chickens, turtles and dogs) >> Stay informed about: Where the heck is everyone? |

July. I'm counting the days.

I mainly just scan the list every once in a while to check for
activity. Guess I'll come out of semi-lurk mode for just a bit (at
work). We have an Orange Wing Amazon that we got from a friend six or
seven years ago. The vet has estimated his (he's been sexed) age in
the 25 to 40 range so there's no telling how many different homes he's
had, and whether they've been good or not. He says his name is Beaker,
and he talks quite a bit, though a lot of it isn't particulary
understandable. Every once in a while he'll pop up with something new
(at least to us).
Getting Beaker was my wife's idea -- we've already got what I thought
was a large enough menagerie, but she got her way. Unfortunately (for
her), Beaker decided I was his person, not my wife. She feeds him and
keeps his cage clean but he will gladly rip body parts if she gets too
close. He lets me pet on him, rub his head, play with his feet and
wings, snuggle under my chin, and seems to really trust me if I take
"new stuff" slowly.
>From the reading I've done, it seems like its not too unusal for an
Amazon to develop an afinity for one person over another -- has anybody
else experienced this?
As far as the rest of the menagerie? One Sun Conure -- one of the
loudest critters that God ever created. One elderly (about 13) cat,
and 11 Standard Longhair Dachshunds -- ages from 4 months to 12 years
old. (We show and field trial the dachshunds). As you can imagine,
the house is never dull (or quiet, either).

Definitely. My adopted amazon (which I wrote about in two other groups
today, obviously I'm failing to do real work today) was supposed to be
my companion. But he decided he was wild about my youngest son at first
sight. Literally. So while he trusts me, talks to me a bit, finds
security in me when necessary, it's my son who percolates his behavior,
even if all he does is stand in the room silently.
I have no idea if there was someone like him in the bird's pre-adoption
life, but the effects are very pronounced. >> Stay informed about: Where the heck is everyone? |

We adopted our Amazon directly from the breeder when she was about 5 months
old. We were worried that she might prefer one of us, but she adores us
both equally. She'll be 10 next month.
We adopted our Grey 2 1/2 years ago from the same breeder. We had heard
that they *definitely* were one person birds, but no -- she's wild about us
both. >> Stay informed about: Where the heck is everyone? |

I just found this group by chance--I'm a newbie. I got my first Amazon two
months ago. He's an 18 year old Red Lored named Bongo. He was the
dirtiest, smelliest bird I've ever seen. He'd never had a bath, never had
warm food or fresh veggies. He's missing all his front toes also. I
already have an African grey, a sun conure and a nanday conure. I was asked
to take him from some people who had no time for him. I obviously couldn't
say no.
He's the sweetest bird in the whole world. He bit the heck out of me the
first few times I gave him a shower, but once we got through that he turned
into a different bird. He doesn't speak "human" but instead barks like a
dog when he wants attention. He can't perch very well because of his toes
so I carry him around like a football. His wings aren't clipped because he
uses them for balance so he flies to me wherever I am in the house if I
don't take him.
My problem with Bongo is that he is trying to get at the nanday conure,
Mario, and I'm afraid he will hurt him if he does. Does anyone have any
advise on this? Maybe a way to safely introduce them? I would appreciate
any suggestions anyone would toss my way............
By the way, I also have 2 miniature schnauzers, 2 cats, 2 kids and 1
husband.
Thanks.

You may have heard this theory before, but along with the "25 to 40"
estimate, I'd guess he might have been born sometime after 1976. That's
when the "Muppet Show" first aired, and one of the Muppets was named
"Beaker". Not that someone wouldn't have come up with that name for a
bird before then, but it probably got more popular around that time.

We experienced this a bit in our house. We adopted Babybird, our yellow
head Amazon, from a friend who could no longer take care of him. The
primary owner in Babybird's life was female and he fell for my wife right
away. He had little to do with me for a long time, but we are now becoming
really good friends. He distributes what he will allow to each of us. I'm
allowed to pick him up while my wife is allowed to play with his beak
without losing a finger. He talks with my wife but sings for me. He has
named me Fred and apparently I'm supposed to answer the phone when it
rings. :)
