I came across this while googling on pet mice odor.

It claims if you add it to their water it "virtually eliminate these odors".
See it here:
http://www.petfooddirect.com/store/product1.asp?pf_id=101037201&affili...Code=PF(Froogle)&cm_ite=DDI%20Link

I have five male mice in a 10 gal house and the odor gets, well you can
imagine how it gets with 5 mice in a fairly small room (about 175-200 sq.
ft).

Any comments? Has anyone tried to use one of these water additives? Do they
work?

thanks

I tried it for a while, and it didn't seem to make any difference.

I've heard a few drops of vinegar in the water can make a difference but
I've never tried it.
The only thing that has worked for me is earth - just normal soil from the
garden and sprinkle it on the cage floor before adding the normal bedding,
there must be natural bacteria or enzymes in it which breaks down the urine
better and prevents ...I'd estimate 75% of the smells.

When you say 10 gallon tank, do you mean a glass tank? - they require quite
a lot of ventilation to help stop it building up in the first place, and
glass is possibly the worst material for male mice tanks! - plastic isn't
much better unless it's got crossflow ventilation (not just in the lid), I
use plastic stacking cases, with vents cut out of two sides (3 inch square
hole with mesh) along with lid ventilation.

Thanks for the reply. You told about the soil use in the past. I was
imagining your mice living only in soil. I envisioned 3 inches of soil.
Woops! Now I know what you meants and I'll get a bag tonight and sprinkly a
little soil on the bottom when I change the bedding in a few days.

I'm using an aquarium, yes. No cross flow. Only the top of the aquarium.

They would love to live in soil but I won't let 'em! - I do occasionally
fill a flowerpot with compost and soil mixed and let them dig it all out,
they love digging!!

I went to walmart and a couple garden sections at local hardware shops.
Despite being in Hawaii, it's just not the season for a wide selection of
gardening items. Most places cleared 95% of their shelves 6 weeks ago.
There's only one or two soils I could find, and they said something about
containing plant food and feeding plants for up to X weeks....

Shucks. Any other suggestions? I'll keep checking around for some basic
potting soil.

Brian,

The best thing I have found for odor control is Aspen Supreme pellet
beddding material. It looks like rabbit food, but it really works to
control the odor. It also has low dust and absorbs well.

....in memory of "Squeakers," who died on 10/16 :(
