My budgie seems a little under the weather but I am not too sure if he is
having a major moult or sick. He is really fluffed up, is very clingly and
wants to be cuddled and stroked. He is also off his food but drinking. He
seems to be exploring everywhere more than usual but also taking lots of
naps Any suggestions!!
Cheers

If you think your bird might be sick, how 'bout taking him to the vet?
Nobody online can diagnose or treat your bird.

Have you heard of such a thing as an avian vet?? They exist in areas all
over the UK. What you do is phone for an appointment and take tyour bird
along. This avian vet person exhamines your possibly sick pet, makes a
diagnosis and prescribes medication to save it's life and restore it to
full health. The process is fairly simple andstraightforward. *anyone*
can do it.
Otherwise, you could post and ask people to do an online diagnosis, and
in the meantime wait for your bird to either die or recover by itself. >> Stay informed about: Not too happy bird |

Avian vets might be all over the U.K., but I live Atlanta, GA, a city
of 4 million people and so far as I have been able to determine, there
is only ONE certified avian vet in the city. I bet there aren't a
whole lot in the rest of the state, unless they treat chickens, since
Georgia is a major producer of poultry. I couldn't find any budgie
breeders either, just a few who do large parrots and of course people
who deal in chickens. I am stating this just to make a point that it's
not always so easy to find avian vets in certain areas. Of course I
would recommend looking for one and then, if that fails, seeing
if any regular vets in your area know anything about birds, but the
presumption that there is one... After dealing with this city, I
wouldn't presume.

What is with this group - can you only subscribe if you can reply in the
most sarcastic manner, I asked for some advice last night to see if I was
missing something obvious as I didn't feel it was an emergency enough to
call out a vet - what is sad is you have wasted enough time typing a
response back, rather than just making a straight forward suggestion in a
decent manner - obviously you have to be chosen to post on your precious
group - Sorry I ever asked!!!!
As it happens, our nearest avian vet as you so call it is just over 45 miles
away and I am a disabled person with limited mobility. My budgie is my
companion since my husband died last month and just a little friendly advice
would have been appreciated. Please don't assume that everyone is as mobile
and conveniently located as you maybe.

This group desnt belong to nobody in particular. Feel free to post your
"concerns" and dont take it too personal. I guess many people doesnt bother
to check with a vet before checking in the internet. I think now is clear
your need of advise and somebody can give you some feedback. Any comment you
dont like...just ignore it...dont waste your time answering....

Oh poor little you being disabled and too disabled to take a sick bird
for proper veterinary attention. FYI I too am disabled with a very
painful condition requiring me to take opiate painkillers. Do I post
looking for free online cyber diagnoses? Nope, I get my arse off the
seat and go to a bloody vet.

Just to keep you all informed, the bird was kindly taken to the vet for a
check up this afternoon and yes he was unwell but this was mainly down to
having a major moult, however, as he was there the vet decided to give him a
vitamin injection just to make sure, unfortunately this experience of being
handled by strangers, taken in the car and given an injection has been a
costly mistake. Unfortunately he died in my hand just over a hour ago,
Thanks for the advice

I don't know if you have any other birds or not... but it is advice you
have a necropsy done on the bird to really try and find out what was the
cause. Why? It could be something contagious that your next bird, or even
you could get, also knowing the cause of death will give us an idea what
to do or what not to do next time we have a bird.
I'm sorry the bird died.

Well apparently the availability of an avian vet was not an issue after
all.... although in one post the person complained the vet was over 45
miles aways and he/she was disabled, the bird was taken to the vet
anyway...

I have no idea why you think your post was relevant. My reply was to the

Sorry to hear that your bird died. Birds hide symptoms until it is too
late almost. For future reference, a nutritious diet and perhaps a
calcium/vitamin D3 supplement or a little egg food would help a bird get
throughh the moult.
