Hi all. `Haven't posted in a long time, but `have been lurking, so I
figured writing about Felix in here was the best place. My poor guy is
going to go deaf. He has had troubles w/some tumors (benign) growing in his
left ear. This summer, he had $1,500.00 worth of surgery to remove said
tumors. The other day, I noticed the same ear was leaking again. So
yesterday, he went to see TED. Come to find out, his right ear has them now
too. TED said that they will grow slowly, and eventually will block the
canal; thus, Felix will lose his hearing. It'll happen first in the left.
TED said it could be five or so years before Felix will lose all hearing, as
it will diminish slowly.

Felix is an indoor kitty, so he'll always be safe. I am treating the ears
w/steroid drops from TED. Purrs and prayers that the hearing loss is not
for quite sometime yet.

Thanks to all,

Awww. Poor Felix. It sounds like you're taking good care of him; I
imagine
with his hearing loss being so gradual, he'll adapt to it. Cats are
just
amazing that way. Hope he does well.
I wonder about Boots' hearing sometimes. She has polyps in her ears;
several
in one of them. I'm sure she has them in her sinus cavity too; they go
hand-in-hand, and both are probably caused from the herpes virus. The
vet says its
not something to worry about, they don't cause her any discomfort,
except
she snores.

Trust me, it bothers you more than it will bother him. Cats are very good
at dealing with disabilities. They are also excellent at feeling what they
cannot hear. Since he will be safe he will be fine.

aw, poor Felix. Going deaf probably won't be too big a
problem for him since he is indoors only. We will purr
and pray that the condition grows very slowly so he has
many years of good hearing left. Give him extra skritches
from us.

So sorry to hear about your poor boy, but if you can fix things so he can be
safe and comfortable-- and you will-- he has every chance of living a very
happy life, and adapt well to his hearing loss.

My RB kitty Blizzard was completely deaf for the last few years of her
life.

It happened slowly, so that one day, I just realized she couldn't hear
anything.

On advice of the group, I learned to stamp my foot when I entered a room
she was in.

I still talked to her, but of course she couldn't hear me.

But she continued to meow to me as much as ever.

She was pretty old, but it didn't seem to affect her quality of life in
the very least.

I hope this is the case with Felix, too.

It probably won't be any big deal. My Muriel went deaf quite suddenly.
She goes outside, but hadn't been beyond the garden wall for years.
The only difference is I often have to pick her up and carry her to
the catfood since she can't hear it being served. As far as she's
concerned this is simply another service befitting her exalted rank.

Purrs are on the way that it will take a looong time before he looses

May be the growth will stop. One has heard of things like that before.
And he will manage. Purrs for your nerves as well.

I really want to thank everyone for the kind words. It's also good to hear
from many that cats adapt to hearing loss, or for those that are born deaf.
I had to use the Epiotic cleaner on Felix's ears today... which he hated.
Foamed at the mouth and all. Since this is going to be a forever thing, I
guess it's just something we will both get used to. I still have to put the
drops in as soon as he comes out of hiding.

He's such a scardy cat as it is. I rescued him from a cat house year's
back. The cat lady thought he was a girl and had named him Courtney. I
think that alone dashed his spirits some way back when. He does come out
when visitors come over, but it takes a while. I do have one friend... my
best friend... who is over a lot. Felix adores her!! He also has taken a
liking to my dad when he comes up for a visit.

`Am hoping his little purrsonality won't change!! Thanks again, everyone!!!

Sorry to hear about Felix, but deafness is cats is not such a problem - they
get used to it an adapt.

My friend's cat, Bowie, is deaf, although you'd only rarely notice it. She
knows exactly where you are if you are in the house, she can feel the
vibrations of your footsteps through the floor. She can often 'hear' loud
noises, too, if she's close, because of the vibration in the air changes.
She has no problem catching mice and birds when she escapes (she's
*supposed* to be indoor only because of her deafness, but she's a great
houdini) and is otherwise a very loving and very active cat. The only
drawback is that when she does escape, she can't hear her name being called
or the box of kibble being shaken to come back - she just comes home in her
own good time. Then again, many cats with perfect hearing do the same too.
:-)

You really nailed it there. Cats don't listen. Ergo, they should manage
pretty well if they can't hear.

I always kind of felt (in a very casual way here) that my hearing loss is
kind of payback. I all my life have been terrible at listening. Even when
I could hear perfectly well. Someone would try to tell me something and my
mind would wander. I have and always had an excellent visual memory.
Audio, not so hot. It used to drive my co-workers a little crazy to say the
least.

So now I serve penance for all those times I didn't listen. The cochlear
implant is wonderful mind you, but it still requires a certain amount of lip
reading. If you have to read someone's lips, you have to pay attention.
There are family and friends that might think it serves me right.

Of course, I still have the cats option. If I can't be bothered to listen
to someone, I just don't look at them. Everyone knows that if I'm not
looking at you, I can't hear you. Either not wearing the implant, or it
isn't on, or the batteries died, or I'm just plain tired.

Selective hearing isn't always all that bad. Just ask your cat.
