I cured the shedding problem by getting a non-shedding breed -- Lhasa
Apso/Shih Tzu mix! I swear there was enought fur for a spare puppy with
my Goldens...

Hi Shelly,

You are, of course, quite correct, in your statement that all dogs shed;
indeed, all mammals shed. However, for those wishing for a
‘non-shedding’ dog there are breeds available that don’t drop their hair
all over everything. Many of the breeds that sport double coats trap the
shed hairs within their pelt resulting in few hair balls drifting across
the kitchen floor like furry tumbleweeds. Many of the terriers have
double coats for example . . . and essentially don’t shed in the
conventional sense. The downside is that the owner has to comb the
dead/shed hairs out of the coat periodically (once a week is best) in
addition the outer-coat has to be stripped twice a year, usually.

My personal nightmare has been that my daughters, especially the one
who officially is Sammie's mom (yes, she refers to me as Sammie's
grandma as well, but at least she has the only seven years old excuse)
are extremely picky about our poodle's cut. They don't want froofy
like in the cartoons and stuffed animals. They didn't like the clean
face look the first groomer we tried gave him. They stressed terribly
over her next grooming. We found a new person to try that was
recommended because she does show grooming. Even though the cut
Sammie has does not remotely resemble a show poodle's cut, the girls
love it. I think it has more to do with listening to what we want and
knowing lots of options to suggest. So now I am off the hook for
grooming (the girls do their own brushing, both fur and teeth, of
their own dogs and the groomer does the clipping) and just on the hook
for paying. Thank goodness for living in a hickville cheap services
town!

My mother refers to Rocky and Friday as her "grandogs", but
she's got the seventy years old excuse. TTYTT, I think she's
being somewhat facetious, at least I hope so.

My mother refers to my dogs as her "grandkids." It's more
of an "OH, MOM <rolling eyes>" thing, and probably not one
of the most embarrassing/discordant thing she does.

I know a woman who tells people about her "grandgoat," which you have to
admit is pretty funny.

I refer to my father as "granddad" when speaking of him to the dogs. Yes,
I realize there is no reason to speak of him to the dogs. However, when
he's visiting, I like to ask them "Are you glad granddad is here? Did you
have fun with granddad?"

I am forced to do this because I call him dad, and he's not their dad, so
there you go.

Oh I know it doesn't make any sense. And I do know the dogs are not my
kids, I don't think of them as kids -- but I also don't think of myself
as their "owner" -- although I will sometimes use that term, I just don't
feel comfortable with the idea of some creatures owning other creatures
-- they are part of my family, so describing them in human familial terms
seems kind of natural to me.

I think it's fine. I never, ever, refer to my dogs as furbabies or as
my kids, but I do catch myself referring to myself as "mom" or DH as
"dad". Well, it wouldn't be right for them to call us by our first
names, would it? And I haven't been able to come up with anything
else that describes the relationship. My mother has referred to the
dogs as her granddogs. Poor woman has no grandchildren, and never
will.

Actually, that's what we do. As in "Judy's home!" "Judy's fixing your
supper - you'd better Go See!".

DH sometimes tells people the dogs are our grandchildren but it's not a
comfortable thought for me. And I don't like other people to refer to us as
Mom and Dad to the dogs. These are not furkids. They are extremely highly
maintained, somewhat spoiled little dogs. And they are more important in
our lives than most people (non-dog people) can imagine. But they are not
our kids.

We do, however, refer to our parents as Grandma and Grandpa to the dogs. So
there you go.
