If it sounds like a bowling alley in your basement my bet is on squirrels.

Don't start any fires until you have the chimney checked-something could be
nesting, blocking the chimney.

Squirrels have terrible memories.
They are out all day in the winter trying to find the nuts and bolts they
stashed all spring and summer for leaner times. If you've ever come across
nuts in your yard, just barely covered with dirt or grass, that's some
squirrels stash that has been long forgotten.
They forage for food in daylight and raise hell in your house at dusk and
daybreak. They sleep when it's dark. That's why lights 24/7 will hasten
their departure.

I can relate to that!

A veritable squirrels Hilton.

That should work, as long as the rodents can't wriggle through.
Then I'll bring out a chimney expert. The

Yes, I think so too.

I really don't know, haven't had any experience with Rid X.

I don't know, but when I read your sentence I took it to mean what you meant
it to mean. Know what I mean?
I think I learned the term from Ken Kesey's "Sometimes A Great Notion".

I tried some to get rid of the rats last spring (nope) and
thought it sounded a lot like a fluorescent light. Without
having stuck a meter on it I don't think it's high-pitched.

I'm really not sure. About 5 years ago the VFD burned down
the closest house, which was in such condition that I guess
you could consider that normal rat habitat. Other than that
things haven't changed much, which is partly why I like it
out here.

It's morning, and I've done more research: No unusual noises, loud or
otherwise, down there day or night. Now I'm leaning against the
squirrel theory, though I don't have another to replace it. A single
critter of unknown species that got Cubbe all excited then exited?

You can tell what you've got down there, you know, by
looking at the poop.

I'm reminded of the logic dying patients use for trying untested wacky
cures. If it doesn't hurt and doesn't cost much, why not give it a go?
I imagine that when rodent infestations gets bad enough, people get
that same sense of despaired try-anything logic. And if the critters/
symptoms go away, something that might happen when the diagnosis wasn't
right in the first place or when the critter wasn't positively
identified, then it's proof that the machinka works. The more I think
about this, the more I'm thinking I'll go buy one immediately.

I'm liking this one. It would explain Cubbe's going nuts when we don't
hear anything. It would explain knocking over the glass. It could
explain the missing trap and the other traps not set off. (The missing
one was the one most in plain sight. A cat could have run into it or
batted it with a paw, thus putting the trap somewhere we haven't found.)
There are cats in the neighborhood and sometimes in our yard.
(They're not strays. They belong to neighbors.) It would explain the
lack of poop.
It doesn't explain how a cat would have gotten in there. Or out of
there in the case of a chimney entry.
