Archived from groups: alt>pets>reptiles>snakes (more info?)

When travelling to Cyprus a while ago I almost walked into a large
snake crossing my path. It was approximately 250cm long, solid shiny
black in colour but with a coppery red head (up to about 10cm from the
tip of its nose). It was a chunky looking snake, around 5cm diameter.

We have searched the web and cant find it listed in any of the sites,
can anyone help identify it?

Cheers
James

That was the only one i could find that sort of matched the looks of
it, but its colours were much more vivid - the copper head was like a
semi-dull copper coin (UK 2p) and the body was *jet* black. Is it
normal for their pigmentation to vary significantly in vibrance within
a species?
