I have an aquaclear 150 for a 20G tank but it doesn't seem to be cleaning
all that well (could account for slow decending nitrites). Does the filter
sponge need replacing? or do I need a stronger filter? Is it possible to
get too strong a filter?

I think the 150 should be sufficient for a 20g. If it looks like the
flow out of the filter is less than what it used to be you might want to
try rinsing out the sponge in a bucket of tank water (or at least
dechlorinated water). The sponges in the aquaclear should last a LONG
time as long as you rinse out the debris from time to time.

The flow is the same, there just seems to be more debris in the tank. The
sponge does have a lot of brown gook that is hard to get out (seems like
hair or string). I will try doing as netmax suggested and use two sponges.
