jp_23,
Ranchus and Chinese Lionheads are suppose short rounded fish and they are
compared to Sumo Wrestlers. In fact, in Japan in Ranchu shows some of the
same terminology for judging Sumo Wrestlers are used to describe Ranchus in
competition.
Ingrid is telling you in her response that they need high protein and high
fat, this is wrong. She has no supporting information that this is the way
to feed Goldfish. It is not. There is research that does show that high
protein, high fat diets cause to fat to be deposited around the liver and
heart causing health problems for the fish. You should look for a food in
the 30% range with a fat content in the 4 to 9% range. Feed your fish in
small quantities through out the day. Goldfish are always going to be
hungry, they don't have a Stomach, just a widening in their intestines and
the food feed to the fish is better digested if it moves through the
digestive tract slowly.
If you are breeding fish in the spring or raising fry higher protein foods
are good, but only for short periods of time. Feeding fry high protein
foods for over 9 months at a stretch can cause floaters.
Older Goldfish, need a maintenance diet that is lower in protein and lower
in fats. Sho-Gold is a good food with in the parameters that I have
mentioned. There are other out there, you have to look at the labels and
choose wisely.
