Just wondering what breeds you guys really like out there. I'm a dog
lover and it's rare that I meet any dogs that I seriously dislike.
My favorites are, in no particular ranking.
German Shephards - A well bred GSD is regal and a powerful working
dog. There's just something about german shephards that project power
and dignity all at the same time.
Labradors - I haven't met a lab yet that wasn't a totally affectionate
tongue machine.
Doberman pinscher - Dobermans are the F-16's of the doggy world. They
are sleak and always ready for action. I like the temperment in a well
bred/obedient doberman as well.
Mini pinscher - I would have never have known about this breed if I
didn't adopt one by chance myself. These guys are little clowns that
get into trouble a lot. Anyone that owns one must have a sense of
humor.
English Mastiff - something adorable about a 200lb lap dog.
greyhounds - They run real fast :)
Dogs I dislike..
Depends on the individual dog but i've had bad experiences with chow
chows and chihuahuas. I tend to avoid both breeds but i've seen some
gems. >> Stay informed about: What are your favorite and least favorite breeds? |

My Top Favourites or so I think
1. Shih tzu <-- until now still haven't meet one that doesn't have a
face that smiles constantly.
2. Labrador Retrievers <-- Another very friendly dog
3. Other friendly dogs :)
Least Favourites
Basically, any dogs that are aggressive.
1. Chihuahua
2. Rottweiler >> Stay informed about: What are your favorite and least favorite breeds? |

My favorite breeds:
Pug - Sawyer was DH and my first pet together almost 9 years ago.
Rottweiler - Intelligent and intuitive breed (Maxy)
Pitbull - I would have never though I would fall so hard for this breed
because terriers are the one group of dogs as a whole I couldn't own. The
breed characteristics of the Pitbull when properly directed and socialized
make it a truly remarkable dog.
Breeds at the lower end of my favorite list:
Almost All Terrier Breeds - WAY TOO MUCH ENERGY!!! They are like little
sugar rushes. I love to exercise my dogs but I need at least one hour of
sleep a night.
All Other Pugs - I have come to realize that my pug (Sawyer) isn't a pug,
he's a very short human. All other pugs I've met (there are 6 in my family)
I couldn't live with and neither could he.

What an irresistable question.
I like friendly dogs. Shy dogs. Exuberant dogs. Gutsy dogs.
Affectionate dogs. Playful dogs. Relaxed dogs. Regal dogs.
Zoomie dogs. Busy dogs. Concentrating dogs. Con dogs scamming
me for some attention or a treat. Superior showdogs, Earnest
working dogs. Loyal family dogs.
Of all breeds. I've never seen a dog that
didn't appeal to me on some level, never seen a dog that
I found ugly.
I don't like aggressive dogs.
Breed - doesn't really enter into it, though I admit I am
wary of pit-bullish and amstaff-ish looking dogs. Hanging
around this newsgroup and getting to "know" a few PBs
vicariously has been useful.
But I HAVE an Airedale Terrier because my husband
is hooked on the breed and I enjoy working with a
dog with a mind of her own.

Both lists are going to be huge generalizations, since I have met
individuals of pretty much all breeds that I've liked. The list of dogs
I'd really rather not live with is shorter, so: no hounds, pointing
breeds, smaller terriers. Generally, no yappy breeds, and no small dogs
unless they have a lot of spunk (I realize this might have a lot to do
with how they're raised). Top of the 'I want one of these' list are
GSDs, Rotties, Dobies, Northern breeds like Malamutes and Huskies,
Boxers, and Pugs. Pretty much everything not on the lists are in the I
could live with one if I had to list.

I have to agree with this, i'm naturally and maybe stereotypically
suspicious of pit bills I meet. Mainly because the people that often
have these dogs are "tough guy" types who don't have a clue. These
pits end up being ill socialized and unpredictable but i've also met
the gentle pit raised by a caring owner. I guess it varies quite a
lot.
Another "breed" I like seeing but would NEVER own one is a
wolf-hybrid. These dogs are so unpredictable but if socialized/bred
right they combine the looks and intelligence of a wolf with the
better qualities of a dog. Ethically speaking, the world probably
needs less of them because they are so unpredictable and people have
them for the wrong reasons. >> Stay informed about: What are your favorite and least favorite breeds? |

Well I have a favorite canine esthetic - I like long lean body types, pointy
noses, "dry" skin (not loose and floppy), ears that go up (high-set button
or semi-pricked ears are also nice), dramatic coloring, lower set, full
length tails.
In personality I like the herding type: easy to train/smart, biddable, tends
to stick close (I like to hike with my dogs offleash), introspective,
friendly without overwhelming guests and strangers, a working off switch.
I'm also extremely lazy and thus hairy dogs are not my cup 'o tea. Not so
much the brushing/grooming issue - for example I could handled a rough
collie. However from watching folks owning bearded collies and Briards, just
keeping the face and feet clean seems a daunting task.
Fortunately the smooth collies seems to fit my preferences both in esthetics
and in personality but I probably would be fairly happy with some of the
other members of the herding group.
I've pet-sat a number of different breeds & mixes and I've grown fond of
each one. I can find something I like in most every dog. Even the most
difficult dog I've ever pet sat - Precious the Lhasa from Heck. In
Precious we had to come to an understanding on basic manners ("DO NOT hump
me, my DH or my toddler, you little <insert descriptive cuss words>
fuzzball") but after his remedial course in polite pet dog behavior I
discovered that he had a charming personality and was actually a fun dog
underneath all that hair.

I think we've discussed this many times before, and Chris & I share
similar likes. I adore prick-eared, pointy nosed dogs. While there
are a lot of smaller dogs that I find lovely, my personal preference is
for medium to large sized dogs (no bending to pet!). I find this in
most of the herding breeds, especially Collies & Belgians, a few of
the sporting dogs (usually sans the pointy parts--like English Setters,
Flatties & Field Spaniels), Dobermans, and most of the Sighthounds
(esp. Borzoi, Saluki & Greyhounds).

Me too, which more or less elimates the sighthounds. I like their
reserved nature, but I like dogs that want to be near me. With me,
I like a dog that will go over the top with gushing love. :-) Yep,
Coda is like that, and Bodhi is VERY like that.

I don't mind grooming, but I prefer a smooth faced dog as well, probably
the same reason why I prefer prick eared dogs--easier to keep clean.

Me too, also I think that right now, for what I want in a dog, the Collies
might be a bit too laid back, and the Border Collies too much! :-)
The average GSD I see looks clumsy to me compared to the Belgians,
since they are lighter in bone & stature, and Belgians just have a
"prancy-ness" to them that I like.
> I've pet-sat a number of different breeds & mixes and I've grown fond of

Yep. I never imagined that an English Bulldog or a Lab could be so
fun or sweet until I met my brother's EB, Amos or dad's Lab, Molly.
Amos is like dynamite, he's explosively fun, and adores *everyone*.
Molly is cute, fun-loving, and gets along famously with my brats, even
when they're trying to herd her around the yard--she solves the problem
by diving into the creek & leaving my hairy beasts at the shore! :-)
There's an AmStaff in an agility class I've gone to that is hilariously fun-
loving. She "bounces" everywhere, and when she misbehaves, she
leaves me laughing. Especially when she glances over her shoulder
to her handler with a terribly mischeivious grin on her big mug!

me too. but my favorite is different.
Hair, hair, hair. I like shorter muzzles as opposed to pointy noses.
Prick ears.
Keeshonden, Sammy's, Pomeranians. Malemutes & Siberians are my type
also.
I also like smush faced dogs - boxers, bulldogs, frenchies!

After seeing a Spinone on tv I thought 'maybe I *could* learn to live with a
bearded dog.' Those dogs are seriously cute.
As for breeds that I've actually met, I like the temperament of and would
consider owning:
Labs (of course)
Boston Terriers
Pit Bulls
French Bulldogs
Boxers
Standard Poodles
I guess from this list it's easy to tell I like dogs that make me laugh.
Aside from a disposition suited to being a family pet, my biggest
requirement is no professional grooming. I'm entirely too lazy to keep up
with that requirement. So I guess I'll have to get over that should I ever
decide a poodle is for me after all.

We're the opposite as I like dependent, human-focused vs. independent and/or
aloof. I should probably amend that to say that I bond most closely with
dependent type dogs. The ones who are the opposite are ones I have a really
hard time bonding with (because they don't seem to need me maybe). I saw
someone say that they aren't into mushed faced breeds in this thread which
also caused me to chuckle because they are my favorite...to look at anyway.

Friendly dogs. Any type of friendly dog is at the very top of my list. I'm
not planning to live with a Golden in this lifetime but anything up to that
level of friendliness is okay with me.
Dogs that don't shed. (Hence, I'm never planning to live with a Golden.)
Dogs that think. I LIKE a dog that outsmarts me once in a while. I LIKE a
dog with a sense of humor.
Well-bred dogs of almost any breed. Just because I don't want to live with
them doesn't mean I can't appreciate them at YOUR house.
I have discovered that I like dogs with beards. All the schnauzers. Irish
Wolfhounds. I have no explanation for this affinity.
I made a list a while back of the breeds that I would like to own. DH was
really surprised by some of the dogs on the list. Unfortunately, I'll never
live long enough to make it through the list.
Besides each of the schnauzers, I'd like (in no particular order)
A really nice Lab.
A well-bred GSD.
A Brittany.
A Cocker. *I'm thinking one of Melissa's well-rounded, great temperament
ones.)
A Beagle.
An Irish Wolfhound.
A Papillon.
A Standard Poodle.
A Basset Hound.
An APBT.
A Border Terrier.
A French Bulldog.
Mostly if I don't like a dog, it's the individual dog that I don't like. I
don't like overly aggressive dogs. I don't like yappy dogs. I like dogs
who have some basic manners, either naturally or trained.
There are breeds that I just don't understand. Chinese Cresteds, for
instance. Lowchen. Italian Greyhounds. I like the English Bulldog but
wish the breeders (and the buyers) would return the dog to what it was meant
to be.
