Hi there,

My daughter is "sharing" two pet mice with a friend. They switch off
houses, and the mice have been at the friend's house for about 1 1/2 months.
Well, they came here last night, and one of the mice has gotten fat. The
white one is nice and looks fit, but the buff colored one looks much heftier
than the white one. We live a relatively small town and the pet store
doesn't have "mouse" food and gave them hamster food, saying that was
appropriate. From what I read here, that is NOT appropriate, so I found
some "mouse and rat" gourmet food at the local Fleet Farm, figuring it was
better than hamster food. Well, this mouse obviously likes gourmet food.
: )

So, should I put them on a diet of just mouse and rat pellets (also
available at fleet farm but very boring) to try to slim it down, or just
leave it be fat? It is running in the wheel (a lot) as I type, so it is
active.

Or maybe this breed of mouse is just generally "heftier" looking than the
typical white mice?????

Thanks for your input!

Shelly

Hi Shelly,

I think Phil L's reply was right on, and I also have a large tan colored
mouse. She is just a bigger mouse all around than my others, bigger tail -
everything. Sometimes the all-white mice can be from "feeder" stock
(meaning they were bred to feed snakes etc.) and those can be smaller that
regular fancy mice. It is good that your larger mouse is still running on
the wheel.

I feed my mice many vegetables and am surprised that they really do like
them and sometimes prefer them to the more commercial food offerings. A
good variety is key.
