Mine is actually a black and decker wizard - I just buy the sand paper
rounds to put on it.
I thought Atty would hate it due to the noise, but she's fine with it. It's
not exactly quiet, and I do wish it had a longer cord, but it reaches the
bed from the plug in the wall. She's a diva - loves mani's and pedi's. She
just lays there and offers her paw. Not so much as a baby, though, so I did
alot of toe playing. I'd tell her... knock it off, I own those toes and I
will touch them whenever I want! (same went for ears)

As Melinda said, the smell can bother the dogs. That's been my
experience, too, so I prefer to Dremel the dogs' nails outside.
The cordless would have been a better choice but I bought a
corded model in the days of NiCd not-so-good batteries. If I
was to buy a Dremel now, it would definitely be cordless.

I've played with all of my recent dogs' feet from the moment I
got them. Rocky's always been fine with nail trimming of all
sorts, Friday dislikes it (started off at 7 months as hating
it), and Maybe acts like she's being punished.
Maybe is the one I'm somewhat concerned about. She acts like
she's being punished but puts up with the punishment because she
trusts the punisher.

Dremels need some desensitization with many dogs, what with the
motor and all.

Yep. Nail trimming used to be DH's jobs (one of the few things he
does for the dogs), but he has no patience and insists on trimming
with them on their backs. The Whippets don't mind, and we've had dogs
that were fine with it, but he tried it with Music and Music tried to
bite him, and things deteriorated from there, so I took over doing
most of the dogs.

Do the vets actually do the nail trims?

Yeah, I don't know why I even said that. I'm usually pretty calm, but
it depends on the situation and why we're at the vet's in the first
place. It doesn't take much stress for most dogs to pick up on it,
and most owners will be stressed if there's something serious going
on.

I sit on the floor, invite a dog into my lap, and have to fend off the
others. Everyone wants their nails clipped! I often do it while we
watch tv. Dog is on sofa with me, I keep the clippers nearby, and
sometimes the paws are all up in the air. I just did Rudy's that way
last night. He went back to sleep.

That is completely the wrong way to frame it. The correct
way is:
I care so much about my dogs and their health. Think
how crazy Harv would be without me!

I know a few ACD owners, quite the opposite of clueless, who make every
effort to accustom their puppies to foot handling, clip toenails regularly,
and still end up using 2 people and a muzzle each and every time. I'm
pretty sure it isn't their lack of dedication or canine savvy, so I'm left
with the impression that there *are* dogs that are so sensitive to having
their feet handled that it never becomes routine. Not many, but they do
exist.
I haven't had to deal with any, though. Knock wood.

The rescue did a dog wash fundraiser a couple of months ago, and I don't
think any of us realized that people that want their dogs bathed might also
want to have their nails clipped. I believe we ended up having to volunteer
some brave soul to do it. If there is anything worse than fear of cutting
into the quick of one's own dog, it has to be fear of quicking someone
else's dog. We ended up with one bleeder, and it looked like a blood bath
(white towels were in use), but it was the guy's personal dog.
