That's how I did Elliott's. He was fussy about his feet. He was
never mouthy, but he'd try to pull them away and he'd wriggle like a
trout whenever I did his nails while he was lying down. Standing,
horse-wise, he was fine.

I've found that massaging their feet does wonders towards
desensitization in general, which makes trimming easier in
turn. Start at the ankles and work slowly towards the toes.
It has other obvious benefits for the dog, too ("No feet, no
horse" applies to dogs, as well).

That's something I've done with Harriet, and will do with future
dogs, too. I massage her feet, but I also play with them, just
because I can. I think it's probably helped to make her less
protective of her feet.

I suppose we'd have to ask the dogs. Although most dogs I've known would
put up with it, none have enjoyed it overly much.

Doing anything to Khan is no big deal. He assumes you're about to kill him
anyway and just lies there like a lump. Pan was a drama queen, until the
Dremel came along. Her quick grows right to the tip no matter what I do, so
we're both happier when we don't have to clip. Plus, she has to be plied
with treats to get her to act like she doesn't care. In a battle of 110
pound human versus similiarly sized dog, the human always loses.

Of the dogs I currently know, the 10 pound min-pin actively hates having his
nails trimmed, and won't hold still. He was fine until he went in for his
neuter, when, without his owner's consent, the vet trimmed all his nails
back and quicked every single one of them. He recovered from his neuter
faster than he recovered from that, and had a hard time putting his feet on
the ground. Ever since, he won't allow his feet to be handled. After two
years of trying, they are finally able to trim his nails again, if they're
quick about it.

There was a lovely, lovely dog at the dog park that turned into a snarling
beast when nail trimming time came around. She had to be knocked out to
have her nails trimmed. I don't know if the owner tried to work with her or
not, but he said that it was like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde when the clippers
came out.

Yoda has issues with it, which is why I do them the day before we go
to the vet so they aren't tempted to do them. I work with him on it,
but he never seems to progress. Using a grinder helped with him a
lot, but he is still far from easy.

Also, if you do it, since you are putting the dremel to the nail for
such short periods it will not be much more than a tiny nick to the
quick and it will stop bleeding very easily. I did it on one of my
parents' cairn terriers once and it was just a tiny spot of blood and
it stopped bleeding before I could get the styptic powder out that was
sitting next to me.

I have the dog nail model, and while it works, I would not recommend
it. I intend to upgrade to a nicer model at some point. The
batteries are a pain with the dog nail model.

You are correct, an increase in tool speed (rotational speed of the
bit) will cause an increase in heat production if the dremel is
applied at the same rate to the nail.

Yes that's me! No follow through.

I know de-sensitizing the dog is easy, I've done it before with great
success. Shoot, I've de-sensitized my long haired cat to an electric razor
so I can trim her mats out, she lays there and purrs.

Ricki Lee is great about her nails (and everything else).

Jake is awful. I will work on that. I have planned to, I even bought a can
of some horrible little sausages to bribe him with. That was six months
ago...

This is one bad thing about having black dogs -- black nails. I have
quicked Zoe twice and now she's terrified and so am I. I prefer
professionals and she needs to be muzzled during it (but she's
compliant).
