Booker is not doing so well. He has another kidney infection, just
having had one 2-3 months ago. This time, his BUN is at 261 and the vet
says normal is up to 31. She said it's going to be hard to pull him back
from this.

What could have caused 2 infections? She was amazed at how quickly he
got well the last time, but his numbers were nothing like this. He also
has very dilute urine and some blood traces, and white blood cells.

Anyone had a rabbit come back from BUN that high? What did you do?
Booker's on fluids and Baytril, but is so thin and frail, I hope he can
get through this.

I don't know his age, maybe 7-8 or more. If his kidneys were just giving
out for age, I could understand, but why did he have infections both times?

I will ask the vet more tomorrow too.

Thanks!

Rhonda

I too send prayers. I have no experience with this.

I am not knowledgable about that, but I send Booker well wishes for
better health. This little one has been through so much and needs to
get well. Healing vibes sent. Carla Liza and Jodie.

Hi Rhonda,

My apologies that I can't be of any help, but I can send prayers his way
for some comfort.

Kind regards Kate, Honey and Miranda

Rhonda,
Sending you and Booker good vibes - I know how stressful this must be
for you.

I think Ronnie's explanation was wonderful. I was going to suggest the
SubQ fluid therapy. Our cat has had kidney problems for a number of
years (he's my mom's cat actually, so she monitors all the blood
levels and I know BUN is one I hear about often). The vet did diagnose
this as renal failure. She has been successful at giving him a happy
life via twice weekly fluids, and many of his numbers have either
improved slightly or stayed the same. The fluids give him more energy
and keep his weight at a pretty stable level (he had been drinking a
lot and losing weight prior to this).

I don't know how Booker would tolerate the SQ therapy, but it can
definitely be something that isn't terribly invasive that helps the
quality of life be maintained.

Sending hugs and prayers,
Marie

Great explanation Ronie!

Poor beautiful Booker. :-( I dealt with high BUN with Snowbelle before he
passed due to renal failure. His was really rapid onset, at least I think
it was. But, it could have been that my then-inexperienced bunny self didn't
notice the symptoms -- and I just noticed it when he became critical.

I hope Booker improves with the fluids Rhonda, and that he'll feel better so
he can eat better and be with you for awhile longer yet.

Sending vibes and positive thoughts your way!
Hugs gf,
Laurie

Thanks everyone, for the good wishes and info. And thanks Ronie for the
great explanations! I will have to read it again tomorrow and try to
absorb more. I think I am in brain failure myself.

We are still doing sub-q, but he is really fighting it. He's so tiny and
frail and it's easy for the needle to hit the wrong thing when he starts
fighting and fussing. It's stressful for all of us. He is eating like a
horse, I'm trying to feed him more of what might be good for him.

As for the urinalysis questions, the urine was expelled from him onto
the exam table. They are good about cleaning inbetween animals but I
know it could not have been sterile. I was told he has "traces" of blood
under the scope, but it was not visible to the eye like last time. She
did tell me he had "lots of white blood cells" so I do believe it was an
infection.

I'll let you know what happens. Thanks again everyone.

Rhonda

i find the easiest way to give fluids, is in the kitchen sink. i take a
fluffy towel and let them stand in it and be calm. i can even give them
alone like this. just hang bag from cabinets.. just take your time...

Hi Rhonda,

Sending good wishes your way. I just wanted to share something that was an
absolute life saver for me and Watson and the sub-q regimen: I used a
carrier with a top that opened. I would put Watson in the carrier (lined
with several towels so that he didn't slip around). Once the needle was in,
he was pretty oblivious to me and the needle. If he started to fuss, I
would just lift the lid and touch his back and hold the needle in place.

I have since given sub-q fluids to Zeta, following the same method.

I hope you find something that works for both of you.

Cathy

My guess is that his first infection wasn't totally cured. How long was he
on abx the first time? Deep infections can take a long time to completely
kill.

I would try to get him to eat some richer foods to keep some weight on. A
peanut a day would help. Is he on sub Q now? I would keep him on sub Q for a
very long time to give kidney support. Months or a year even.

Cocoa has been on fluids now for hmm, two years at least, originally to
clear the sludge from his bladder, though the vet thought he was probably
heading into renal failure because his kidneys seemed to have shrunk. I had
my doubts about that.

He is very good about getting his fluids.
I have reduced it from daily subQ to a couple/a few times a week. I don't
find it too onerous and Cocoa likes the cuddle time.

Rhonda,
Maybe you could try burritoing Booker with a towel and cutting a little
square out of the towel for an injection site to do the fluids. That would
keep him calmer I think.

Cocoa is so mellow, I don't know what it is like to have a more rambunctious
bun! Prayers for dear Booker.
