My husband purchased what he thought to be a purebred english bull dog
and now we find out that is is mixed with american bulldog. We just got
the papers that said it was mixed. When I called the breeder he said
all bulldogs are mixed. I had really wanted an english bulldog because
of their gentle nature. This dog is extremely agressive with my other
dog and has bitten my son twice. I am very disappointed because we paid
a lot of money for this dog. Does anyone have any advice on how to
handle this dog? I sure would appreciate it. Thank you

Thanks for replying I will take the dog to someone soon. I guess I was
concerned bedause I did call the local animal rescue and they told me
they would not accept this dog because they consider it in the same
category of a pit bull which they will not take. I'm glad you had good
things to say about american bulldogs because after I heard that about
pit bulls I was quite concerned. Thank you for your advice

The dog sometimes seems to go into a rage and knocks over my huge
mission oak dining room chairs her ears are flattened to her head and
she seems to be quite upset. For instance, my son did not want her in
his room and this really seemed to upset her. The other day h e took a
pillow away from her and she chased him up the stairs and pinned him
to the ground I used her collar to pull her off I dont know quite know
how to explain but their is a certain look and appearance of the dog
when she is angry that seems kind of scary. When she bit my son on the
abdomen he said it was very painful and there is a welt like mark on
his stomach. The puppy was born in late december and is a female.

I definitely do need some guidance from a dog trainer and have found
one that will work with the whole family. I think there was a huge
miscommunication with the dog breeder and my husband. I was up half the
night and did some resarch. Apparently what we have is an olde english
bulldogge wihich is quite different than a english bulldog. The former
wasnt bred until later and was supposed to be an improved english
bulldog but much bigger. Now that I have a better undersstanding of the
breed I feel a lot better.

American Bulldogs share some ancestry with the American Pit Bull Terrier,
IIRC, and can be quite *dog* aggressive. For me - and this is based on
personal experience with them - they are in the category of dogs I
automatically distrust *with my dogs* until they prove themselves
non-aggressive towards my particular dogs.
However, I've never seen one behave at all agressively towards a human,
even when the humans were breaking up a fight between the AmBull and another
dog.
It's possible that your local shelter may have that policy based on DOG
aggression**, not human aggression..or they may simply be blindly following
BSL.

**The director of Animal Control in my county has an automatic PTS policy
on all found Pit Bull Terriers. The policy was instituted after several
incidents of severe attacks on other dogs by Pits adopted from the shelter,
with the final straw being a Pit who killed the adopter's other dog less
than 48 hours after being brought home.
I believe they do make some exceptions on owner turn-ins, and they do
allow finders to reclaim Pits they've turned in, although they strongly
discourage it.
