we have a coop full of homing pigeons, and sometimes they sound like a barn
full of cows, but I wouldn't say they are either loud or a noise pollution
source. Mike.

The doves shown in religious art are usually pigeons, not the white ringneck
dove. A religious friend told me that the Bible word can mean dove or
pigeon.
I think Sarah's bird would be a ringneck or Barbary dove, don't you?

From what everyone has said about pigeons, I am quite certain that I have a
ringneck dove. I just needed someone who kept both to tell me the
differences. Oh, and don't worry Geopelia, I wouldn't let my birds lose
outside. There is no way they would ever survive the New York winters not to
mention that when my oldest bird gets out of his cage he courts my big dog.
Not the greatest survival technique. Thanks for mentioning that other group.
I do post there occasionally. Unfortunatly they are all pet dove keepers,
none attempt to breed for conformation. I did study exotic avian husbandry
in college but it was all based on pet parrots and hawk rehab. So far trial
and error seems to be working for me.
Thanks,
Sarah

Are you a member of ADA? www.DoveLine.com
You can get to their shows and talk to people there.
Being in New Zealand, unfortunately it is too far to swim! I enjoy their
newsletter though.

I have gone to the website before. That is where I buy my leg bands. Being a
member is something I have thought about but just haven't gotten around to
seeing what the benefits are. There are many county fairs and the state fair
where I can show the birds. I just have to find ones I can make it to and
build up enough of a flock to risk loseing one at a show. Are you a north or
south islander? I have set a goal of returning to NZ within the next 5
years for a visit.

It is worth joining as they have excellent articles, there is a Members
Directory and you can advertise to buy and sell birds, get all the news from
the shows etc. I think I'm the only New Zealand member so far, but even so
far away I find it very informative.

I'm in Mairangi Bay, North Shore, Auckland

Hmm, the one area I didn't get to. Did fly into the country there. Thanks
for recommedning the ADA. I think I will join. That article on the front of
the webpage looked like exactly what I would like to learn about.
Thanks again,
Sarah

Another good site is

www.internationaldovesociety.com

follow the links. There is a lot of information, especially about dove
genetics.
