Carrie,
I'll be honest with you.... and I know this is a bit different from losing a
pet.... I took care of someone who was getting ready to go home the next
day. this person was excited and told me stories about their home and their
animals.... the following morning, I come in for my shift and stopped in to
say hi. I noticed this person seemed to be breathing hard. they'd just
gotten out of the shower. within the course of 8 hours, this person went
from being ok to on a cold slab in the morgue for an autopsy. that's just
how fragile life is.... the end result? a pulmonary embolism that had broken
loose and lodged in the heart. in short, the patient "threw a clot".....When
I lost Brogan, we had no idea that she was pregnant.... we got a call at 5
am, I noticed she was asleep at the foot of the bed.... I was petting her,
hung up the phone and lay back down....something just didn't *feel* right so
I literally kicked dh out of bed to turn on the light and whispered
"Brogan's not right! something's not right!" he turned on the light and
there she was.... motionless.... cool to the touch.... (considering we had a
fan on, that didn't seem surprising) so I checked for breathing and a
heartbeat.... nothing.... there hadn't been anything for a good 3 hours but
I didn't know that until I attempted to turn her onto her back for chest
massage and gentle CPR....it would have been futile.... damned shame....
necropsy showed 2 babies caught..... knowing that a litter had to be a bit
bigger than just 2, we searched the apartment.... later that night we let
Snowflake out and within 15 minutes, he found the nest! we lost all the
orphans at 9 days of age. we got conflicting info from our vet and HRS.... I
wish I knew about this group when all this happened.

A valid point, and exactly what I was thinking, my first bunny who lived on a
60`s diet was put to sleep at the age of 13 by my parents due to me being away
at college, he was a NZW that would have had a far better quality of life if
only I knew then what I know now :(

What do you do when you see an endangered animal eating an endangered plant?

Is there another word for synonym?

To start, I'd like to know what "survivorship" means in this context.
There are only three definitions in my dictionary, one being "the state
of being a survivor" which doesn't seem relevant here, as there is no
common event for our rabbits to have survived.

The second has to do with legal rights of a surving spouse, joint
tenant, business partner or such. Not relevant here, obviously.

The third being "Chance of survivorship, the chance that a person of a
given age has of surviving another of a giving age; thus, by the
Carlisle tables of mortality the chances of survivorship for two
persons, aged 25 and 65, are 89 and 11 respectively, or about 8 to 1
that the elder die first" but if the only point in this exercise is to
gather a snapshot of the demographics of a particular group of rabbits
rather than an ongoing study or rabbit mortality within apr, then that
can't be relevant either.

So, I'm back to "I don't understand"...

I know Maxwell is at least 3, but I think hes a lot older. He just seems
older. His behavior is so consistent. He seems set in his ways.

Anita ... I am really curious as to what kind of chart you are doing
and what "the curve" is going to show. Is there a link to the
information on RabbitVet so we could see what information you are
combining with the information on our bunnies? Curiosity has just
gotten the best of me :-)

A while back we did a count on RabbitVet of rabbit ages. I don't know
what the outcome was. What I would like to do is to do is to do a
survivorship curve. It is kind of hard to explain why I want to do
one. I guess the easiest explanation is trying to deal with the loss
of a young rabbit.

When Toofer died, I felt like he had been cheated out of all of those
years. He should have lived to at least 10. I had so much guilt that
something I had done, or hadn't done, had robbed him of those years.

What I want to do is to chart the ages of pet rabbits (Sorry, D,
cottontails not included). I thought I would combine our rabbits'
ages with the results on RabbitVet and construct the curve. If
everyone (including lurkers) would post their rabbits' ages here or
email the ages to me at acaudle.DeleteThis@gate.net it will be most appreciated.
If the rabbit is less than two years, give the approximate age in
months. If more than two years, give the age in years. If you know,
you can also give the breed and gender. That will be some
good information.

To start things off -- Jessie, NZ white (mix?) female, 2 years
Quark, California mix male, 7
months

Hmm, Okay, here goes, it's a long list. 20 rabbits to name off. Aprox means
give or take a month.

Estimated is just that, an educated guess based on how long they have been
fostered, plus how old I guessed them to be when they arrived.

Mule Adams- 2 years old

Pops- Rescued late in 99, that makes him at least 4 1/2 years old. Full grown
when we got him

Samantha- 1 year old

Cassandra- 1 year old

Snowball- 3 1/2 years old

Dusty- 20 months aprox

Arrow- 20 months aprox

Hansel- 2 years 6 months aprox

Gretel- 2 years 6 months aprox

Sylvia- estimated age 1 year

Doodle- estimated age 2 years

Sadie- 2 3/4 years old

Frisk- 3 years 3 months old

Betty- 1 year old

Boop- 7 1/2 months old

Paul- 2 1/2 years old

Twinkle- 10.5 months

Thumper- 2 1/2 year old

Benny-estimated age 1 year

our minilip Max is approx 7.5 and a sleepy little old man. He still loves
his veggies and petting, but has definitely slowed down.

Are you saying that spoiled food may have killed Rocky?

I assure you this is not the case. I only feed my rabbits fresh pellets. I
throw them out if I have had them too long. I wash all veggies before giving
them and I look over the hay before giving it to them. Also Chloe and him
were bonded and she had no symptoms of any problem what so ever. A necropsy
was performed on Rocky and showed he died from his stomach twisting and
expanding and cutting off circulation to vital organs causing him to go into
shock. It is similar to bloat in dogs. The vets do not know the cause for it
but I have been told by several different vets that there was nothing I
could have done and it just happens sometimes. This has been a very hard
thing for me to accept and some days I still have a hard time accepting it
so to have someone suggest I fed Rocky something that killed him is very
hard for me to take.

Thanks, Kathryn. I thought I should start notifying people by email that I
had gotten the information. It will keep the thread from becoming a
monster.
