Kim, thank you for the numbers. It is good to read that I am not alone in
my feelings about losing such a young rabbit. I didn't know that Rocky was
so young. I know you well enough that I'm sure nothing more could have been
done. Your care added years to Libby's life.

In less than a week we lost our oldest and our youngest. It just didn't seem
right to me that he was so young. He got sick so fast I had no time to fight
for him. He was fine when I fed them the night before. When I got up in the
morning there was something obviously wrong. He died on the way to the vets
a little over an hour later. I have had to fight illnesses with buns so many
times that I didn't know how to deal with losing one that wasn't sick. He
had been our healthiest rabbit until then.

Mike, thanks for the information on Scone. There is nothing that is being
proved. It is just information that I (and maybe other people) am
interested in seeing. There will be much error in the curve, since the
sample size will be limited. But I think it will be interesting to see
survivorship of rabbits who are well cared for. I won't make any
predictions right now, though I have some ideas on what the results will be.

Yes, I am a bit of a nut ;)

I don't understand... You're gathering the age of live rabbits, rather
than the age of rabbits who have died.

How does that tell you anything about "survivorship"?

A better question is... What are you defining as "survivorship"?

It seems to me that all you're gathering is an informal profile of the
age of the rabbits owned by the people who respond to your message.

Nhu, the foster kids are definitely wanted. And if there are bunnies, they
are wanted, also. If there are no bunns yet, however, I think you are in
the clear.

All the other ages are recorded. (Gosh, this is so much easier than chasing
critters in the field to get life history data. I did that for a few
years.)

Nhu, I have a feeling that you, Kim, and I are not alone in our feelings
about losing a young rabbit. Losing an older rabbit is difficult because
there is such a strong bond that develops over the years. Losing a young
rabbit is difficult because there is so much guilt.

Thanks, Shan. I'm glad that you understand. Your rabbits' data are
recorded. I'll have to leave out the unknown age, though. I have a feeling
that there will be many, since many rabbits come from rescues.

Tantrum, it still hurts to read about Dunlop. I know that there is a
special place for young rabbits at the bridge. I am just considering
rabbits on this side of the bridge right now, but I think it would be good
to think about the ones who have crossed.

I hope that Dunlop is at Toofer's birthday party tomorrow on the other side.

Snowbelle at the bridge - male white NZ, 13 mo. He died quickly to me - over
a week's to,e - due to kidney failure suspected to be caused by a congenital
defect. *sigh* broke my heart but taught me to love rabbits!

At home:
Patches, female, b/w mix, 5 years
Rosie, female, ND mix, 6.5 years

That's for sure. Midnight was only 14 months old... I still go through in my
head wondering if I did more harm than good when I was trying to help him...
just so hard to understand. Totally healthy bunny, and then, wham 12 hours
later, he is dead. So hard to understand.
