Post subject: Hi... I'm new to Rats
Archived from groups: alt>pets>rodents>rats (more info?)

Hey Everyone...
I wanted to introduce myself to the group. I am BRAND new to owning
rats. I got 3 baby girls on Friday, January 2nd. I got the rats for
the kids because they were bugging me and because we found someone who
would give them to us for free to avoid feeding them to the snakes.

I did a LOT of research ahead of time on the internet while waiting
for the youn-uns to get weaned. I read all these websites and they
were truly facinating! I especially like the Dapper Rat. I just
couldn't believe all the time spent on and with the rats. I thought
"that will NEVER be me!"

Well, I was wrong. I have spent more money on these "FREE" rats than
I have on myself! I find myself going to regular stores for regular
stuff and thinking "I wonder if the rats would like this". I go WAY
out of my way to go to different pet stores just to see if they have
anything different that I could get for the rats!

My husband likes the rats but he is getting tired of me talking about
them.

Is there a place to go (besides here) where I can go and just talk and
talk about rats???

Also, I need some help naming the babies. We are at a loss. I would
like the rats to be named starting with the letter M to match my other
animals.

Thanks!
Lori

Hi Lori,
I gave you some name suggestions earlier.
But thinking on it do you want just ordinary names or do you want to go wild
and have themed ones, like constellation names or weather or Mythological.
I have a good crossword help dictionary with all different titles in
alphabetical order. Go on go wild with the names

Hi Lori welcome!!

you will grow to love your rats more and more, more then you ever
thought possible! At least that's what happened to me. How great that
you did some good research before getting them, when I got my first
two, I did not have a clue and made many mistakes.

keep us posted on the names!

Thanks everyone for replying. I'm leaning towards Melody at this
point. I think that's the cutest name of all!

Hi Lori! Welcome to the group! Rats are just the best little critters,
aren't they? I always find myself doing what you do and having to check out
the pet stores of any new town we visit - I love to see the ratties all so
excited when you give them a new toy.

There are quite a few rat forums out there where you can discuss ratties to
your heart's content. Try doing a google search for 'pet rat forums'.
There is also another newsgroup alt.pets.rodents where you can talk
about rats.

Regards names I went out and bought a cheap 'Names' book so I would never be
stuck for names. I have also, in the past, named my pets after artists I
like, so maybe you could have a theme to help you choose. At the moment two
of my rats are named after characters in my favourite film. I do like
Maisie as a name though - it is the name I chose for the only female rat I
have ever owned. She looked so much like a little mouse when I got her that
the name Maisie seemed appropriate.

Tracey

Hi,
There are actually web-sites with rat names. I was goofing around one
time and typed in "pet rat names" and up came sites. Good Luck, Janine
