Rats are much like children.
Rats can make you smile.
Pick up a rat some lonesome day
And cuddle it for a while.

Don't try to understand it.
Don't rear back in chagrin.
Just open up that basement door
And let those rats swarm in!

I love it! I've been trying to find homes for my babies and today someone
said "no their gross, dirty and stinky". I was not a happy camper. I think
I'm going to put this up at work. Thank you. J

When I talk about my rats people gross out. When I show them my bald rattie
they fall in love.
Show pictures and let them meet your ratties.
I don't understand why people gross out on rats instead of guinea pigs when
rats are defiantly cleaner and friendlier and more social.

I think most of us would agree that out of all the small animals people keep
as pets, it's hard to beat rats. It's just some people are so narrow-minded
and have been so indoctrinated with rubbish, they aren't willing to accept
what wonderful little creatures rat are.

I was at the pet shop the other day and a mother and her son were looking at
hamsters. She asked one of the assistants to get one of the hamsters out
and said, "They are hamsters aren't they? We don't want anything to do with
rats... urgh!", as she grimaced at the thought of rats. It makes me fume -
the ignorance and prejudice of some people. Another thing about this pet
shop wound me up - there were all sorts of rodents for sale, but only on the
rats cage was there a big sign saying 'Careful we may bite!'. Well, I don't
think I'm wrong when I say that in my experience rats are the least likely
to bite - the gerbils I used to keep were swines for biting me and I know a
lot of people who have kept hamsters that have been bitten a lot. Even vets
comment on how they can trust rats not to bite, but are usually bitten by
hamsters and gerbils.

Had a bit of a refreshing change at a wedding we went to the other week
though. At the reception we were seated on a table with six others and the
conversation got round to pets. So I said I had rats. As expected everyone
started to go Oh no! How can you? They are horrible things, blah, blah,
blah... But surprisingly one very posh elderly lady on the table said,
"Oooh, yes, rats, I do like them. They are such interesting creatures."
Apparently she had never had them as pets but used to watch the wild ones in
her father's barn for hours when she was a young girl on their farm - said
she'd been fascinated ever since. Makes a change, not only someone that
likes rats, but wild ones aswell!

Tracey what a great story. I hope that woman helped change a few minds. I
get so tired of trying to defend what I love so much. A lady at work was
good naturedly teasing me. I didn't take too much offense to it this time
and was pleasantly surprised when she came to work and said she had done
some asking around for me about adopting out my babies. So there is hope.

That's good news Janine!

I know a few of my friends used to recoil in terror at the mere mention of
the word 'rat', but after keep meeting mine, have not only come to tolerate
them but have grown very fond of them. These once 'rat-haters' were really
upset when Oscar died a few weeks ago as whenever they came round to my
place they would have a little cuddle. I do have one friend, who has a
rodent-phobia though, can't do anything with him I'm afraid. But he did
insist on giving me some money a few months ago to buy the rats a present -
he said to show he hadn't got anything personally against my pets, just
can't get over his phobia! Offered to give him gentle exposure therapy, but
he's having none of it!!!
