I have been considering owning an African Grey. I fell in love with
one that is a resident at a pet store in our area. Can you own Grey's
with other animals (dogs and cats)? Where is the best place to buy a
Grey? What are the main reasons not to own a Grey? Thanks Lori

Greys can coexist with dogs and cats as long as you take sensible
precautions.
In a well adjusted pet household the dogs and cats will come to regard
the parrot as one of the family but both dogs and cats can be
unpredictable if they are left on their own with a free parrot.
It only takes one bite for a real tragedy. Be prepared to let your
parrot fly in your house. Many people trim the flight feathers but
remember they are birds and being able to fly is part of their nature.
They will be happier and healthier and more confident if they can
exercise their wings.
Greys need a lot of attention. They are highly intelligent and social
animals. You cannot just leave them in a cage all day and expect them
to thrive. Remember that a grey can live for fifty years so they are a
lifetime commitment. You should buy one from an experienced parrot
breader who will advise you on the correct diet and cage size (The
bigger the better) .
Check out some good books on looking after greys. Amazon has quite a
few.

Hello,

I have Tigger, Tootsie and tango - 3 young, hyper cats who go CRAZY every
time they see a crow or seagull in the garden. They headbut the window to
get to it.

However, they accept Mario my African Grey and Harry my Umbrella Too as part
of the family. I still take precautions, but in all honesty I let them run
about inside Harry's aviary and there has never ever ben an incident.

Gary.
