Archived from groups: alt>pets>reptiles>snakes (more info?)

im wondering if any one can help me find out why my snakes died. i have
always wanted a snake and finaly got two baby royal pythons. we were told to
set the temperature in the tank at 85 we gave them a large dish of water to
soak in and rocks and a log to clime. One ate a fluffy after two weaks wich
we were told was very good. the other one didnt eat but we were told with
royals that was ok cos it can take up to six months to settle in. i looked
for a book all over to help me understand the best way to care for them but
i could not get one. i started asking people suposidly in the know and was
told that they would benifit from a u.v light. a few days later i noticed a
few small mights on the snakes. i went imediatly to the pet shop and asked
him about the mights and also told him about the u.v light. he told us that
although the mights are not desirable they would not hurt them. he also said
that they did not kneed the u.v light but it would do no harm. anyway the
might problem got worse and his answer was always the same but he orderd a
spray for us to get rid of them. it turned in to an infestation and the same
answer came back again just waight for the spray and dont woury. about two
weaks after the mights first apeared my sister picked one up it strugled to
breath for a few seconds then it just died. we were devastated. we took it
back to the shop the next day for him to ortopsy. he asured us again that it
wasnt the mights. he could find no cause of death. a few days later i came
down in the morning and found the other one coverd in mights and clearly
dead. during the descution with the pet shop owner he told me that it was
the u.v light that had killed the and on no acount was it the mights. so im
looking for answers now i feal awfull that this has happend and nothing you
can say could make me feal any worse. i kneed to know so that this kind of
mistake isnt repeated

the mites drink blood therefore harm the snake, the uv is not necessary
because the snakes are nocturnal but they need a day cycle and a night
cycle, more then likely they will hide in the hidebox during the day tho.
sometimes snakes will just up and die, even those that are supposedly
healthy, same thing happened when at the petshop i worked at we got in a
baby ball python, it ate for us, had a few scars but no ticks, no mites,
nothing at all appeared to be wrong, yet after about 2 weeks with us it
died, no respiratory problems either.
