Now he has hurt his ear, it's bloody. And it looks like the hair is falling
off the back of his neck. He is eating very well, and runs on his wheel the
same as he has always done, but when any one aproaches the cage he throws
himself at he bars, as if trying get at the person. Move around to the
other side of the cage with the plexiglass and he follows, scratching and
pounding at it.

It is strating to really creep me out. On top of the fact that he is
obviously not having a good time, I don't want him near me. I've never been
scared of a mouse before!

I'm sorry to keep harping on it, but it sure sounds like rabies. could be brain
cancer.

if he's moved beyond hostile to whacko then it's time to have him killed. if
the vet can autopsy the mouse then have him do it.

Rabies is extremely rare in small rodents. I can't think of a way that a pet
mouse could get infected unless it was bitten by a rabid bat that had gotten
into the house. Even so, it is unlikely that a bat could get inside a mouse
cage to do so.

Once rabies gets to the "acting crazy" stage, the animal has 2-10 days to
live. So if it's been going on any longer than that, it's not rabies. The
suffering animal would probably also show other signs such as an inability to
drink.

It sounds to me like the poor animal has something else wrong with its brain,
like cancer (as Flykiller suggests).

I live in a small town, and the one vet here does not take rodents, fish,
lizards or buggy types.

I don't know how, or want to, kill him myself! My mom used to have me drown
the glue trapped mice when I was a kid. It was traumatic.

He probably just needs a bit of exercise outside his cage.

then you can either put his cage in a quiet corner and let him live out his
days, or you can have someone else kill him. if you need to know some ways
email me and I'll give some suggestions.

It's depressing talking about it, but if you decide on a mercy killing,
breaking the mouse's neck is probably the most painless way of doing it.
Drowning is quick (the animal passes out very quickly), but involves a lot
of suffering during the short death.

Good luck with whatever course of action you decide on.

Sorry. That should read "short time spent conscious underwater."

I have found CO2 to be quick and painless. It just takes seconds. More
painless for the mouse then for me. I don't use it unless the mouse is
really suffering.
