I have had 2 corn snakes for about 4 years now, living in the same tank,
getting on just fine. I think one is male and one female, but I am not too
sure, I was initially just looking after them for someone who ended up not
taking them back.

Tonight I was watching TV when I heard an almighty clatter from the snake
tank and I found them beating the cr*p outta each other (in as much as
snakes can beat each other). They were all together in a big ball biting
hell out of each other's necks, the big albino (male, I think) was bleeding
a little bit, the other one is orangey brown, so I never saw any blood.
Apart from this they seem to be pretty much unharmed. I separated them into
2 pillow cases and put them back in the tank a bit apart, but I am worried
that they will fight again. At the moment I really cannot afford to buy a
separate tank. What are the chances of them getting on ok if I release them
back into the tank together?

Hi Lachlan -- Your snakes were not fighting, they were breeding! This same
thing happened to me a long time ago. I wasn't expecting it either (at the
time didn't even know I had one male and one female snake). So, yes if you
put them together again they will most likely continue their breeding
activity.

I don't know how quick you were at getting them in bags, but you may have a
gravid female soon. You might want to read up on incubating corn snake
eggs!

I've seen them cuddling before, but last night they were going totally
mental, I thought they were gonna eat each other. I'll try letting them
back in together tonight
Filthy buggers that they are.

I reckon it's breeding behavior too. I picked up a male for my female the
same way you did; looked after it for a friend who then didn't want it back!

One very important thing tho; even if you decide to not incubate the eggs,
it's vital that you provide a damp, secluded spot for the female to lay. If
she doesn't have that, she may become 'eggbound' (ie. she won't release the
eggs at all) and you could lose her.

Best idea is to head to your local reptile specialist (we used the local
Reptile+arachnid store) and ask them about it - they'll recommend a
substrate; just dig out a corner of the tank and replace the chips (assuming
you use woodchips) with substrate.

Best of luck, whatever ye decide. :-)
