I have a feeling I'd have to carry Harriet outside, because -58F is
beyond even "pee on the patio" cold.

Yikes, indeed. Thank you for realising that this is a family
group. My descriptors are somewhat more pejorative today.

I enjoyed that blog. FWIW, Teyah the Malamute hasn't been
lingering outside as much as she usually does.

I bet it's the wind thing. I think "wind chill" is kind of
misleading because it measures the effect on skin. But wind
doesn't just cool you off faster, it also gets in crevices
and holes in your clothes (or in Teyah's case, the
undercoat). I think a windchill of -50 sucks lots more than
-50 with no wind.
I hope your plumbing doesn't explode!

I live on the prairies, though near enough to the Rockies that
weather can be predictably unpredictable.

I used the same technique (in the fall with a cold rain) with Moogli to get
him to stay calm in his crate at night when we were sleeping. He would
start whining to get out of his crate [1] and I would take him for a quick
5 minute walk. Only took him one night to figure out "I wake him up, I go
outside, rain or shine!"
[1] Not to go to the bathroom, just to play with us.

Great, that means it will get to Ottawa in about a week.

I honestly cannot imagine that.
It's ranged from 28F to 39F, had a bit of snow-not even an inch, and I am
totally miserable. I am certain I will never be warm again in my life. I
am living in long underwear, wool socks, a hat, and ski bibs. If I need to
leave the house I add gloves.
The dogs are fine with it, in fact, Ricki Lee enjoys basking in the weak
rays of sun we've had. Her with her lab/chow coat.
Jake, he of thin skin and sleek coat isn't uncomfortable for 10 minutes or
so. He has a dashing jacket that he will ask for if he needs it. If he's
really, really, cold, he wants a blanket.
I hope you are able to keep your house somewhat comfortable.
Karla
I wonder if the body heat from the dogs adds any appreciable warmth, well,
if they stay close enough I guess. >> Stay informed about: Too cold for dogs |

I miss the cold and snow living here in N.C. Winter has always been my
favorite season. As for Calgary, always wanted to visit it. Especially
since seeing the movie 'The Silence of the North & reading the book. I
think about the lowest it gets here is in the single digits, but that is
rare. *Normal* cold here would be in the teens at night, 30's during the
daytime. Also not common, perhaps a week here or there during a winter.
This week it varies from the 20's to high 30's overnight, and low 40's to
50's during the daytime is what is predicted. I'd say it was probably about
50 degree's today when I took the dogs out walking. I had a long-sleeved
warm cotton knitted shirt on with a sweatshirt jacket over. About half way
through the walk, I had to stop and take off the jacket and tie it around my
waist because I was getting too warm walking at a brisk pace. Since my
hysterectomy, I tend to run on *hot* all the time. :( Nice in the winter,
but a real pain in the ass in the hot & humid summers.

No, it's not.

That's close to average for your area.

Like, I'm *totally* surprised that you don't have a clue
about your immediate environment.
