hi!
Thanks for the sympathy for the loss of Smoky, I have cleaned
Midnights cage and put in kitchen roll on the floor of the cage for the
time being and got thrown away all the new straw as well. I have hoover ed
my room but am not convinced that it is mite free, so I have not been
letting Midnight out in my room. My mum says that we can buy some pest
stuff to put on the floor but I was thinking of talking to my friend to
find out if there is any naturel stuff to put on the floor instead to kill
the mites because I have heard that a lot of the pest stuff kills mice
too. Does anyone now of anything to kill mites but not mice?

Two suggestions:

1) As mentioned in a previous post, a pest strip containing dichlorvos
(Vapona) can be hung in the room. It will kill every mite in the vicinity.
This is the method often used in laboratories. They are sold under the brand
name "Hot Shot No Pest Strip."

2) Mite sprays intended for birds can also be safely used around mice. They
usually contain pyrethrins, which are insecticides derived from
chrysanthemums. Pyrethrins are known to have low toxicity to mammals. The
brand I have is "Ultra Care Mite and Lice Spray from Eight-in-One." You
should be able to find it at the pet store with the bird products.

I have used both of these products around my mice.
