I have only owned one dog, a mix of terrier and palmoranian, and would
like some assistance picking my next dog.

I would value a watchdog. Not the kind that attacks, but the kind that
alerts or warns off. I have a 3yr old daughter and another baby on the
way so being good with children is important to me. I would prefer one
that didn't shed too badly as it will be primarily an indoor dog (with a
doggy door). Size is a consideration. I would prefer to stay under 25
pounds.

The two breeds in the subject lines are ones my limited research has let
me too. But I have no experience with either so I am open to further
suggestions.

Thanks,

Dave

i wouldn't think pugs would make the best watch dogs. i mean, they do make
all sorts of noise, but not much of it is alarm barking. i'd think a boston
would be more likely to wake you when an intruder comes to your window.

Go down to the pound anyway - you might just find the perfect
dog there. You should be able to figure out their shedding
qualities, even mixed breeds, after playing with them for a
while.

I think it depends on the dog.
We got a Boston for our family when my daughter was 4 years old. He was
VERY active and the kids loved him. He also was small enough to NOT knock the
kids over if he jumped on them (which he did). He has been an incredible
family dog and is now 10 years old.
However, until he was about 18 months old, we never heard him bark! We
finally had to start barking ourselves each time the doorbell rang to teach him
his job. He eventually figured it out and has been a wonderful watchdog ever
since.
But good Boston's are VERY expensive. Pups are usually delivered by
c-section and the litters are very small. They also have a lot of congenital
problems, so it is important to buy from a responsible breeder. We didn't and
ended up putting out over $1,000 the first year for luxating patella surgeries.
I'd recommend going the rescue route. Our vet got a Boston mix from a
rescue and he says he's the best dog he's ever had....not beautiful, but a
great dispostion and really smart. Keep an eye on Petfinder.com...you may be
able to find a great dog....and you'll feel good about saving it's life!
