Post subject: Question about behavior
Archived from groups: rec>pets>dogs>behavior (more info?)

Hi,

In my Wife's never ending quest at making our already effeminate
dog a real "sissy dog", she bought him a coat. I call him effeminate
because he prancecs around the house like a little princess. Anyway,
it's kind of ocol, it's a tan coat and it covers his back and belly
while leaving his "package" and anus well open to do his thing. But
he really seems to like his coat and sometimes I think he likes it
because we put coats on so it makes him feel like more of a familly
member or something, kinda being like us. He liked it from the
begining. We called him over, put it on him with no resistance and he
didn't make any attempt to get it off of him. Now he has associated
the coat with going out so of course he gets excited when we get up
and hold up the coat, but he still makes no attempt at removing the
coat. Even if we let him in and leave him in the coat, he will go
sleep in it and like I siad, this has been from the begining and he's
only had his coat a couple of weeks. Is this typical? My other dogs
I've had in the past really freaked out when putting anything on them
except a colar and even that they tried for a long time to get it off
before getting used to it. Like I said, I think he likes the coat
becacuse he sees us putting our coats on and it makes him feel part
of. I might be way off here, but it seems like a good answer.
It might be worth mentioning that his dog gets hours of attention and
playing every single day. He has many and various toys to play with.
He gets walked 3-4 times a day (he will not poop in the yard. Is this
normal?) He is extremely intelligent. His breed is American Eskimo
Dog and is full breed. I know they are used extensively in the circus
due to their inteligence and well as being very cute (all white)

Are these 2 behaivors normal (not pooping in the yard, unless he's
really, really gotta go, he will hold it a LONG time) and liking his
coat?

Thanks,
Chris

PS.. I'm not complaining, believe me. I'm happy he's cooperative. He
is by far the best dog I've ever met. He has so much personality. So
much love...

Yes. As you point out, your dog has learned to associate
the coat with something he enjoys (going for a walk), plus
he's probably chilly without it. As for pooping, dogs
prefer not to soil their own space.

On the other hand, fretting over your dog's putative
effeminacy, well, that betrays some "issues."

Sorry, I don't buy that as the answer, but body wraps of various sorts
may make a dog feel calmer and more at ease, so that could be what
you're seeing. Being warm may be very pleasant to him as well. I think
a lot of dogs accept clothing pretty well. Head gear, not so much.

Getting attention and play, along with walks and toys? Yes - desirable
and normal. Not pooping in his yard? Not uncommon for many dogs, for a
long list of potential reasons.

They are cute but can also be a little snappy IME. I know several and
their personalities really vary. I'm surprised he needs a coat.

That's a good thing. Stop assigning human traits to him and treat him
like a well loved dog and you should do fine.

I've a Miniature American Eskimo who's been coming here for some
time time. She never barks in my house or yard but is
apparently a terror at home. Oddly enough, she'll bark at her
owner and the owner will pick her up. Hmmmm.

There was a Vizsla at field training today, wearing a coat (yes, it
exposed his anus and necessary parts). It was 40+. The owner wears
topsiders rather than something suitable for a muddy, snowy field.
Anyway, the coat had 2 pockets. We were musing what the dog may choose
to put in those pockets.

My brother's running shorts had no pockets, but he found an attractive
collar for his dog that had a small velcroed pocket. He put his
housekey in it.

It hasn't gotten above 25 during the day and down to a
high of maybe 8F at night.
Hence the growling I'd be doing.
:)

A flask of whiskey and a cell phone, so I could call a cab with a heater.

At the dog park, we have a running joke about a certain badass min-pin. He
prances. He wears coats. He runs and hides under covers at the mention of
'dog park' when it is cold outside. And shivers hiding under the covers.

Rumor is that he hides a shiv inside his jacket. You can't be a badass
min-pin without a shiv, apparently.

Very vocal breed. If he wants to go out he doesn't bark. He comes
over to me, sits in front of me and talks. Not like "Hey dad, can you
let me out" kinda talking, but "rah rah rah ruh ruh ruh", as oppossed
to Ruhoh, ruhoh, raw raw" when he wants to go for a walk. When it's
dark in the house he barks at noises outside, but not too bad. But
sometimes, I have to get up, open the door and have him look out
before he will stop. I'm not kidding. I'm not attributing human
behaivor to him, I'm just telling you what works and what he does.
Now when he's outside, he has a special bark to let us know when he
wants to come in as opposed to the bark reserved for the passerby and
the neighborhood dogs.

We tried to crate train him and had to go to bed with earplugs (in a 3
bedroom house). No barking, just "talking" whining or whatever you
call it. That lasted all but 3 days.
